Airfix Boeing 707 1/144 scale

This one has been in-work too long and I finally got it done by adding some great Braniff Airline decals from JoyDecals.com.

Very nice looking build. I’ve got one of these in the stash and decals to do the ā€œTrans Americanā€ bird from the movie Airplane. Original molds are from 1963! I have the 1976 boxing - she’s an oldie. Guessing there was a bit of filler and sanding to get this one to this level of beauty. Well done.

Thank you keavdog for the comments. I got the kit from ebay and when I opened the kit box there were parts for two complete kits inside…pleasant surprise. I built the first one as a BOAC 707 per the instructions and used the ancient kit decals. Not a lot of parts to this kit and yes, it did need filling and sanding. Getting all the engines aligned took some time and work, but the real effort goes into masking and painting and then masking and painting all over again. The white is Tamiya gloss acrylic, which is beautiful to work with. The silver underside is Tamiya gloss aluminum lacquer, also wonderful paint. The kit comes with a molded clear windshield that fits terrible. I opted to fill the opening and use the super-duper cockpit decals I got from Greg Joy at JoyDecals who specializes in airliners. I’m always surprised at how big a 1/144 kit can be.

Looks great, you did well with the vintage kit (I rather like building oldies myself). The cockpit windscreen looks good with the black solid decals, I’ve done that recently and I think it can look better than a transparent moulding.

How do you like the Joy Decals? Looks like they went down nicely. I purchased my first set from them to build a United 737 my father in law used to work on. Have not yet applied them. Your build looks very nice.

Ahoy Cloudboy. Yes. I agree that the black cockpit looks better than a clear cockpit, especially in this scale. I’m particularly fond of old kits also. Speaking as an ā€˜old’ guy my stash is made up of old kits. I’ve bought a lot of kits from ebay over the years and even my ā€œnewā€ kits are actually only new to me.

Ahoy Project510. Thank you for the kind remarks. I’ve used Joy decals several times and the’ve done well for me. In the case of this Braniff Boeing, the red/blue on the front end came as a decal, but I elected to paint this instead of use the decal. I’ve never had much luck with covering large compound surfaces with decals and prefer to paint them.
