This kit is part of Airfix’s 5 kit 70th Anniversary Spitfire set. It’s an older kit- little interior detail and raised panel lines- but it’s not a bad kit to build. It went together pretty well. I used pastels for the panel lines, but I overdid it a bit. Live and learn. The decals are Aeromaster decals, a set of MTO US Spitfires. (I’m almost done with a Mk. VIII that I’ll be posting in a day or two that uses decals from the same set.)
I normally don’t build 1/72, but I figured a set of Spitfires couldn’t be passed up. LOL
All in all, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
Ah, Spitfires on my building board, Spitfires in front of my eyes, Spitfires in my sleep…Life is Good!
It is fun to build a nice simple model isn’t it, Jon. Nice finish. I think I see what you mean about a little too much on the pastels, but I’m not sure. That part of model building is still a mystery to me, but I’m working on it. It’s a nice challenge.
Very nice build Jon. I think the pastels give a good worn look, I use the same method but on 1/48 scale so I know it must be harder in the 1/72. Overall very nice. I am still trying to find that same 5 kit set.
jeaton01- I need an all Spitfire channel- “All Spitfires, All Day!” It is nice to do a simpler build that goes together quickly. Since I have more trouble seeing the parts at 72nd scale, and the painting ain’t easy either, I kinda slap 'em together and just have a little more fun with them. What I did learn from the pastels use on this one is that black is tooooo stark… shoulda used a more subdued color… brown maybe. Thanks for the kind words!
sidure- Thanks a lot for the encouragement! This is the first time I used pastels in this scale, and I did them exactly like I would at 1/48… and that was another learning experience. Next time- smaller brush to spread them. I found that 5 kit set on Ebay. For a while, you could find a bunch of them. I grabbed one as soon as I saw it. Not a bad deal at $45, I thought. The kits aren’t the best on the market, but hey- it’s a Spitfire, right? [;)] I also picked up the 2 kit set in a commemorative tin (contains the S6B and a Mk. 1 in 72 scale), which I’m not planning on building. (The kits with that are part of the 5 kit set anyway…)
'bout time you tried something different, Jon! [:P]
Nice build, and I like that color scheme with those markings. I’ve been anticipating this one, and I am very impressed with what I see. Good work! [tup]
Nice build Jon, I like the Mediteranean colours too and I don’t think your weathering is too overdone. Those Med birds put in a lot of hours. Thanks for posting and I look forward to seeing your Mk. VIII.
excellent work. Weathering in that scale is fairly difficult to do. Your weathering skill have indeed come along way from eariler work. That spitfire looks better then some I have done in 1/48 scale. Nicely done.
wyoroy, mucker, razordws- Thanks so much guys! Your encouragement means a lot to me.
ruddratt- Thanks so much! Yeah, I kinda dug those MTO US Spits. I bought a whole sheet of decals, so I’ll have to build them all!
phoenix7187- Thanks so much! Weathering is has been the hardest thing for me, but I really like how it looks versus not weathering. So it’s been a learning process. I appreciate your kind words.
TANGO 1- Thanks so much for the encouragement! You’d be surprised how easy that weathering was. Just a bit of Tamiya Smoke through the AB. I put it on slooooooooooowly in many layers, and right when I thought “OK, it’s almost enough” I stopped, 'cause I found if you add that last bit to make it “Enough” you usually go overboard. I also used a bit of silver pencil for some light chipping, and that was it.
