I’d like to get in on this…
Already doing the Monogram “Big Beautiful Doll” for that build, but will be getting either an AM or Tamiya Stang for this one… Enough headaches with the Mono kit… [:D]
Uhhh… due to dwindling space on my memory card, I turned off the photographic memory last time I was over to your place?
Okay, we have a few more folks interested in the Ranch. I’ll get you guys added as soon as I can, should be later tonight…
I’m off for some scheduled maintainence in a bit…
Fade to Black…
Count me in! I have the Monogram 51D for the Monogram build and possibly the Tamiya 51B if I have time. I plan on building the “Ridge Runner” on the D and “The Salem Representative” on the B.
OK, I rustled up me an Acc Min P-51A off eBay for $17.00. Now to Squadron to get some flat tires, and maybe a new cockpit. First Acc Min kit, but have heard nothing but good things about 'em.
Adios!
Hi I am a new old 56ish and am baaack in the game. Used to build back in the 50’s and 60’s and have built 6 or 7 complete models in the last 20 years most of them in the last 5 years
Just built 1/48 T-6 Texan in New Mexico ANG livery I have a Tamiya P-51 D Mustang I have been saving to build a N Mex ANG version of with Ventura decals I bought from Rollo a few years ago. I’M IN . Sorry hope I was’nt to loud. I will start as soon as I finish my Otaki Hellcat.[:D]
Howdy all…
Seems there’sa bunch more’o’them wrustler-types than I done appreciated who’s fancy is the Wild Stang…
Alrighty, the list is updated as far as EWC2003.
Sanderson_91 and shara56, welcome to the Ranch! And a special welcome to shara53… welcome to the forums!
I’ll getcha both added to the list soonly…
Here’s a bit of an update on my Ponies:
Opened one of the boxes and discovered that it wasn’t a fresh kit; 'tis already been started and is quite aways along, so that’s a bit of welcome news, especially now that I’ve almost drowned myself in projects after a building hiatus of… way too long. [:p]
Anyhoo, even though we have a P-51A in the mix now, thanks to wibhi2, I may go ahead with either a P-51A of my own or maybe a P-51; no one’s doing that variant yet. We’ll see what happens.
One thing’s for sure, I won’t be doing any major work on any of them until I can make some progress on some of the other builds I’ve got going, especially the B-25. I’ll probably just do some cleanup here and there and research the schemes, but I’ll be sure to share it all with ya’ll…
Last night I dug out an old build which served as a testbed and which has seen better days. I may try to fix her up and do some more testing on her and that might add a bit of spice to the Ranch and maybe provide some inspiration to those who may want or need it (including myself).
For now, here’s a shot of this particular Stang when she still looked good…

I’ll describe her a bit more later on…
Butz doesn’t get onto the forums as much as he’d like these days, so here’s a bit of an update on his builds:
Mike was over last night and he’s progressed quite a bit on his Pony; she’s pretty much all together and coming along nicely. We did a bit of work on trying to make some custom decals for her; he’ll be finishing the kit in the markings of Dave Perron’s P-51B ‘Little Bitch’ of the 362nd FS, 357th FG.
He also brought his other Stang along, this one being a full-blown adult Mustang (P-51D). He has yet to start this one but he plans to finish it as ‘Master Mike’ flown by Joe Broadhead, also of the 362nd FS, 357th FG.
Woodbeck!!! I got your IM, was busy at the time and so didn’t discover it 'til much later, but those decals you picked out would be a good choice…
That’s it for the moment, now it’s off to bed…
Fade to Black…
hmmmm sounds good steve. really good.

ooooo…oooooo…ooooooo. Pulled out my A mod last night to review the contents and start the decision process as to what I am going to add or not. Turns -out it was one of those value paks with all these wonderful true-details paks (cockpit, 2 types of main wheels and masks and fast frames + qsquadron VAC canopies) added to the box. Must have gotten this kit just before AM went belly up for awhile.
Still may get the Allison engine, moskit pipes and the PE fret that has the better IP and canopy framing. got a little time for that however
I guess I should broaden my horizons and give it a shot. If it’s not too late, please count me in! Would the RAF Mustang be considered a Colt?
Ray
Since I’m already a good ways into the build (on my Hasawega 1/32) I just might add the AM P-51A kit. Whats an extra 'stang amoungest friends?
Awright pardners, looks like ye got yerseffs a Group Build! I’m movin’ this thread on over to the Group Builds corral and putting a link in the GB stickie at the top of the A/C forum.
You’ve picked a great subject: an aircraft as physically beautiful as it was effective at doing its job, and just enough variants (and kits representing them) for plenty of variety in the projects. This is going to be a fun GB to watch. (Of course, I’ve got half a dozeen '51 kits in my closet, but Mr. Thompson keeps marking be build armor! [:0] )
Ohhh… How like him.[(-D][(-D]
Just because I am an illustration freak (and I keep telling myself that I am going to build 3d models of this stuff) I figured I share these to aid in your research.
The last 2 are over my self-imposed 250k image limit (even 250k is pushing it
on a dial-up)for the forums. So I am providing direct links for them.
These images can also be downloaded in thier full format at :

nOOOOOOOooooo…well, ok.
I 'd like to to leap into the saddle (with Denise Van Outen or Sandra Bullock…or both) on this one, but I’ll be doing the Airfix 1/48 RAF Mustang P-51D/J26 and if I can get my hands on another Tamiya, I’ll do Old Crow as a P-51B.
Finishing date is Decemeber ,04, right? Fits nicely with the Tomcat GB i’ll be in on come Jan. '05 over on ARC!!
Nice, I got me a full social diary!!

Well the front office is coming together nicely. Now I don’t want to toot my own horn but I’m very, very proud of this… I really tried hard to get some nice detail worked into this. The floorboards are black to represent the black non-slip surface that they put in some 'stangs. It was all painted in MM enamels, and some of the really small detail on the instrument faces and such were put on with the point of a needle.

This pic’s quality is lacking but just to show some scale… that is a clothespin that’s holding the works.

By the way Steve-O that’s a sweet lookin’ stallion you got there. I was planning on those markings and I hope mine comes out looking a fraction that good.
Ah reckon now we done got each’n ever’won’a ya’ll down on record 'fer this shindig…
Grenadier, is your RAF Stang an Allison or a Merlin-engined variant? Which kit?
Lawrence, you could always pull one’a them Stangs outta the stable and at least exercise 'em some…
Wibhi, thanks for posting the drawings. I’ll be posting some P-51 images as well as some links. But I dunno if I’m gonna post 'em here , or post 'em in a separate thread with a link here…
Vintage, you’re now on the list. I wasn’t totally sure if you had given a yay or nay and which one you were gonna do…
Yeehah, you can take Van Outen and Bullock, I’ll take Ashley Judd… Grrwwwllllllll… [dinner] Anyhoo, I’ve added you to the list and put 'ya down 'fer the Airfix kit. If’n when you getcher Tamiya Pony, lemmee know…
Adam, lookin’ good on that pit. I think yours were the first official progress photos in the thread…
Thanks for the compliment on the Blue-nose Stang. 'Twas a model which I got built but unpainted from a friend and it wasn’t put together too well; so I took it apart, re-did the cockpit a bit and then slapped 'er back together.
I decided to use it as a testbed and have tried out a few things including:
Those are Squadron Fast-Frames on the canopy. They worked like a charm on this model. On two subsequent projects the results were progressively more disappointing… (Hobbycraft P-40C & Tamiya Bf 109E)
This was the first time I used Parafilm to mask something like the blue nose on this Stang. I’d used it for other types of masking which involved simply wrapping the stuff around a part or some such, but this was my first experience using it to mask a broad area.
I was really rather horrified when the stuff lifted right up in the middle of spraying the blue; it kinda fluttered up and down offa the surface for almost the entire painting session. But guess what? Absolutely NO underspray. NONE. I was shocked. To this day, the blue on that Stang is the cleanest masked line I’ve ever done…
Uhhh… oh, an impromptu experiment… I had planned to put different markings on this one; was gonna be Preddy’s 'Cripes A ‘Mighty 3rd’, but I had an OLD (as in ANCIENT) Microscale sheet. It was one of the original issues from when they still packaged 'em in bags.
Anyhoo, the decals were so old that the first decal just shattered when I went to slide it off the paper. So I then went to a quick Plan-B and used the markings for Meyer’s ‘Petie 2nd’, from the same sheet. But I coated each decal with Micro Superfilm (now known as Decal Film in a Bottle, I think) before cutting 'em off the sheet. Had no further problems…
I also messed around with trying different methods of getting a bare metal finish. What you see on that model is a combination of the old Monogram-Humbrol Polished Aluminum (buffable) and plain-jane Testors Silver outta the little square bottles. Mostly it’s Testors, though.
I painted certain panels gloss black before putting any of the silver on and then tried different methods of applying the paint as well as buffing it once dry. Can’t remember all of what I did, but I know I wasn’t too happy with much of it…
I think there were some other things I tried out, but can’t recall at the moment.
Anyhoo, if anyone else wants to post photos of past Mustang builds, feel free. It all serves as a bit of inspiration…
Fade to Black…
BlackWolf, I will be using the 1/48 Tamiya Mk. III (Merlin with a Malcom Hood)
Ray
Ajacketsfan, Looks great. I like how the dry brushing makes the instruments really show up. Will look nice inside your mustang!
