Airbrushing oil paints?

Can oil paint (W-N) be sprayed from an airbrush for a basecoat on armor? would the thinner be turpenoid? What ratio of paint to thinner? Cleanup? I have used oil as a general wash, a pin wash and for drybrushing? Can it be used in airbrushes? Opinions welcome!

Thanks!

my badger can use oil paint,i use thinner to get a mixture like water. i rarely use oils in the airbrush cuz of clean up.use the thinner for that too. imo

Even if your AB could handle it, it’s not a good idea. You’d end up with a sticky, gooey mess that would collect all the dust and lint in the house as you wait up to a month for it to dry.

Washes and filters from oils are great, but not basecoats.

Just a thought…I am an artist who uses oil paints with a medium known as liquin. I use this on canvas. There are paints very similar such as gallkyds and water base oil paints you can get at craft and hobby stores that might work. The advantage would be clean up with water. I am new to the hobby so have not had time to try such paints but they might be worth a shot. If you do try this please let me/us know the results.

Never tried it as a base coat, but it can be used as a filter, similar to a wash, only it’s evenly applied. After spraying, clean with laquer thinner.
