Airbrushing future

I’ve been trying to use future as gloss coat for a car model.

I’ve used future to dip clear parts and that’s working perfectly. However I found it a bit challenging to airbrush it on larger parts. It’s difficult to get it right, either I sprayed too thin and it dried before it can level it self, leaving a foggy finish, or I sprayed too thick that it runs and leave a mark when it dries.

I tried to thin it 1:1 with water but it doesn’t adhesive to the surface very well. I tried windex too, it annoyingly leaves some bubble on the surface.

I’m wondering if there’s any retarder that slows the drying time so it can level it self before dries when sprayed thin on a large surface?

I spray Future straight out of the bottle with no problem at 25 psi, about 6 inches from the model. Although I have two Iwata AB’s, I use my siphon-fed Paasche H w/ a 0.5 mm nozzle because I find it easier to keep Future in an AB jar. Maybe your psi is too low? Any acrylic retarder should work with Future. For AB’ing, I’d recommend Liquitex Flow-Aid, though. It’s not marketed as a retarder, but I does wonders with fast drying Vallejo primers.

Adding a symbolic amount of soap or dishwashing liquid (really just a tiny bit!) helps to break the surface tension and then it goes down more smooth, especially if you add some water to the mix. Hope it helps, have a nice day

It might matter where you live, too. I live in the dry desert here in AZ and I always have a hard time spraying Future.

What exactly is the definition of “surface tension” anyway?

Probably best to google surface tension. But in very simple terms its the ability of a liquid to told its shape. Think water beading on a freshly waxed car hood. The surface tension of the water is strong enough to hold the shape of the water into little droplets instead of spread evenly over the entire surface. So adding something with a lower surface tension like dish soap to paint or future lowers its surface tension so it will “spread” more evenly.
