Airbrush Question

I just got an airbrush from a friend, not sure if its a Paasche or Aztek. The tips look like the Aztek advertised in the monthly contest,. To my question- Do I need a new set of tips for acrylics?

He said the tips he gave me are for enamels and mentioned the possibility of purchasing new tips for water-based.

I’m also not sure what psi to set my regulator at.

Allen,

I use Badger 150 and use both enamel and acrylics with same needle. I do wash airbrush before I make a switch. As for the tip I use Medium and Small Tip (not sure how is on Aztek or Paasche) and I use that for different area or different size of lines. I hope that help.

I used an Aztec Ab for years and don’t remember there being different tips for enamle and acrylic. They had different tips for spray patterns, though (fine, medium, etc). I used the same tips for both types of paint and had no problems.

There is a tip made for acrylics for the Aztec a/b. It’s black in color. It does not have the three guards, tabs or whatever they’re called around the tip like the ones made for enamels have i.e. red, orange, grey, etc. They omitted them off the black one because of the build up of paint that occurs when using acrylics (fast drying). I’ve actually cut the three whatevers off of some of the other colored ones and used them with acrylics but the “regular” ones will still work with water-based paints although you will get a build up of paint fairly quickly and will find yourself cleaning it in the middle of doing a paint job. I did anyway. Now I just switch nozzles when changing from one type of paint to another.

I think I got confused when I mentioned the nozzles different colors. The red and orange tips are used with the another Testors a/b. Sorry, my bad. The colored nozzles that are used with the Aztec model a/b are grey, tan, pink and a couple of others I can’t remember. Regardless, the black was made to use with acrylics. Hope I didn’t cause too much confusion.
