Air strip Disaster

I need some Help. While I was away a couple of my Cats went on the rampage .They cleaned one shelf of aircraft. Most were fixed with out to much trouble but a couple have had their landing struts Broken off flush with the mounting Holes.I’ve heard about using a needle to fix them But that doesn’t seem to help. Any Ideas.I’m looking for after market parts but no luck.

Thanks Paul

Another reason why I’ll never have a cat…

I’ve had some success repairing landing broken landing gear struts by drilling holes in both parts and inserting a piece of stiff wire (like guitar wire) to splice them back together. Use some gap-filling super glue or epoxy. The biggest challenge will probably be getting everything lined back up again. Also remember that the repaired part will probably never be as strong as the original, so treat it carefully.

In some worst-case situations, I’ve scrounged up a new replacement part from another kit, and drilled out the mounting hole of the broken part.

Worst disaster I can remember was when we moved several years ago. Had a pristine Monogram F-14 Tomcat finished with a set of Fowler (remember them?) VF-111 decals. It was carefully packed in a box clearly marked “Extremely Fragile”. So naturally the movers stacked my wife’s sewing machine on top of it. It looked like it had gone through a trash compactor. :frowning:

Wouldn’t it be great to have a model that could get a missile lock on the cat and take it out before it caused damage? Seriously though, you might consider drilling out the broken off piece of strut and replacing it with some sprue material, or just get a piece of brass tubing thet you slide over the broken off piece and install into the drilled out hole.

those two tips will work fine but I suggest using fresh cat gut to hold the parts in place while they dry.

sivastena,

You got great advice for fixes to your aircraft in the above threads. I have advice for keeping it from happening in the future.[:D] I had the same problem with cats and also a beagle. Solved the problem by using an old screen door from an earlier porch fix. Repainted it and rescreened it and put it on the door to my workroom (a repatriated spare bedroom). I now have great circulation, can hear all that goes on in the house, and best of all, the cats and the dog sit out in the hallway. When I’m not home, no problem.

Hope this helps.
