I’m sorry that my previous post about pictures was misleading. Pedro, thanks for the site. A little about the air show and airport.
The airport was opened in the 20’s and was visited by many aviation notables. In the 30’s the WPA built a football stadium at the east end of the runway. That is the left side of the pictures. Next to that was built Derby Downs, where kids 10 to 14 race gravity powered racers they build themselves.
In the background of several pictures, you see a large building with what looks like a white end. That is the Goodyear Airdock. The dirigibles USS Akron and USS Macon were built there in the 30’s. When they crashed, killing crew members, that program was cancelled. Behind the airdock was Goodyear Aircraft where 4,000+ FG-1’s were built during WW II. It is now Lockheed/Martin aerospace. Because the airport is located in a bowl, it is landlocked and was eventually abandoned by commercial aviation. Today, it is used for general aviation.
There were supposed to be several Corsairs at the show, including an F2G. But for various reasons, only one showed up. The gentleman in the B-29 cap is part of Fifi’s crew. He is 80 years old and crewed '29’s in WW II and Korea. He was stationed on Saipan, and said he never had to land on Iwo Jima. His duties included acting as a relief pilot on long missions. He said he was in on the first B-29 raid on Tokyo.
There are two albums of pictures on the site. Click on either one. I hope you like the pictures. Two disks are with my new camera, the forth and fifth rolls of film I have taken. The third disk is with my old camera, because I have a longer lense for it. But you can see why it is being retired.
