Looking good so far Randy!!![t$t] Can’t wait to see what else is going to happen!!!
I’ve been watching you guy build out in email land and you guys have done some outstanding work! Just realized that the build is coming to an end and I haven’t even started yet (those who know me would say what’s new.). Randy, could you switch me from the Eduard L-39 to a High Planes RB-51? Howard, looking at your build has me wondering what a F-82 based Pond racer would look like (Getting an evil thought for the upcoming Weekend GB).
Lewbud no problem on your build change, will that be a 1/48 or 1/72 scale. I will update the front page this evening.
Also I am thinking maybe I should extend the end date a bit. If I remember right Bish had a build going when he was deployed overseas and it seems the builds going now will be cutting it to the wire pretty close, so let me know what you guys think.
Randy- Looking good on the paint[Y] . Is that the Boyds yellow pearl? A very beautiful color. Almost seems to glow in bright light. Can’t wait to see the rest of the paint scheme. Great color to contrast with.
BTW, put me down as a vote for a bit of extension. Been wanting to shoot some Testors glosscoat after work the past few days, but our afternoon T-storms here in central Florida keeps a hold on that. Even rained out a Jonas Brothers concert yesterday. Had a bunch of very disappointed teenage girls in Tampa. I’ll try to clearcoat again tomorrow after work. Still aiming at the 19th as a deadline.
In the meantime , I’ve 10 custom scimitar prop blades to finish up and 24 exhaust stacks to cut and assemble.
**Lewbud-**One can only imagine what you’ve got in mind for a weekend build , F-82 based Pond racer. Sounds intresting . Will be watching for it.
I think we will extend the build some so no worries guys maybe to the end of the month then more if its needed.
Daddy1 the yellow is just plain ole Tamiya yellow. I haven’t shot enamels yet and have to find out how much to thin them for my air brush. I have been using acrylics exclusively, however I find I cant get all the colors I need for some builds in acrylic, and I will need to use an enamel paint on this build. So if anyone can give me a good starting point it would be helpful. I have Testors enamels and I also picked up some of their thinner too.
I finally got a stencil cut out lastnight that I am happy with, and have a few others to figure out, then it will be painting time. I do have them and the model under lock and key so Doc Fermis’s spies cant get to them [:P] Anyway there will only be 3 decals used on this build, the rest will be painted on. An ambitious paint job for me so I hope I can pull it off. This group has really pushed me to improve my airbrush skills I will tell ya, gotta keep up with the big dawgs ya know. I will post some how I dun it pictures if it comes out well.
Thought some of you guys might be interested in this article about whats going on at Reno this year heres a link for ya.
Oh and Fermis Galloping Ghost will be racing this year for the first time in 20 years !! Wish I could be there this year.
Thanks for the extension ,Randy. I can breath a little easier now.
Here’s a couple pics of Tantrum sponsored up. I’ve found with some of the decals printed on white paper, it’s easier to trim close to the image and touch up around the edges with matching paint and a fine tip brush. Look on the insides of the tail fins and you’ll see the effect in progress . The little twin Mustangs still need another thin coat of blue pearl around the edges.
Next comes a few coats of glosscoat, some rubbing out and polish.

[:O] Wow!
Aww man I am trashin the F-5 after seeing Tantrum !!! She is stunning Daddy1
Couldn’t do it, nope, couldn’t trash the F-5 so, I will post a WIP instead. Finally got the masking to where I liked it and shot the second color today.
It will now be Race # 23 due to it being baby sisters lucky number and my old race #. Of course she didn’t insist nor did she beat me over the head with a 2 X 4 [:|] It is still a ways from being close to finished but it is getting closer.
Nice work on the flames[:D[. Love the color contrast[t$t].
I also love your inspiration for the race number. Tantrum and Magic’s N numbers are our birthdates and the race numbers are our birth year. Going with some sort of personal connection like that really makes it feel like your racer, your airplane. Truly one of a kind models.
Howard
I really hope theres another one of these, id like to take part in the next one.
Thanks Daddy1 no where as nice as yours but it will do. I have been thinking you should submit both your builds for the readers gallery or even better an article in FSM.
Scorpiomikey would have enjoyed having your build in the group. I was not planning on a rerun of this group, and wouldn’t mind if someone wanted host round 2. Hosting 3 groups at a time is a bit much for me.
Guys thought you might like this little news tidbit from Reno, some unusual and rare aircraft will be racing this year. Wish I could be there, but will have to see if I can find the races online again this year. Anyway here ya go
The Unlimited Class generally offers the fastest racing, and this year 26 pilots will compete. The airplanes in that class include 12 P-51D Mustangs, a rare P-51A, three Hawker Sea Furies, two Yak 3s, two Grumman F7F Tigercats, and several other airplanes, including an ultra-rare German Fockewulf FW-190. The event also features a gathering of Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft. “This is the largest gathering of P-38 aircraft since World War II, and it’s happening right here in Reno,” said Mike Houghton, CEO of the Reno Air Racing Association.
Wicked. man i wish i could go this year. I wouldnt mind hosting round 2. ive got 2 other GB’s going atm, but i could pick up a 3rd since ones pretty quiet and the other ones pretty small (compared to this one anyway) I may not do as good of a job as you but i can try my best.
Ill set up the GB to start on the 19th, the day this one ends. Everyone all G with this?
Scorpiomikey I am fine with you taking it over. This group will be going past the 19th though as there are a few ongoing builds. At least to the end of the month and maybe a bit longer if its needed.
I am sure you will be a good host as I have peeked into your other groups [Y][Y]
Cheers, Ill start it on the 19th just to keep it in line with the Reno race dates.
I’m about to go up there, in a couple hours. I’ll be online there, so post up anything you need, and I’ll be in the pits all four days, so look for some good stuff when i get back.
Will it run through next years Reno event? If so, count me in . I will build Williams Brothers 1/32 scale: Wedell-Williams Gilmore Special and Williams Bro.s 1/32 Hall’s Bulldog. I posted pics of the boxes back on page 42.
May take a little time to get to them as I’ve a couple other projects going in addition to Tantrum, but would love to have them in a 2010-2011 GB.
Howard
Yeah man, head on over and check it out. /forums/t/131467.aspx
