Here are some views of the Tamiya Seiran I built right after it came out (pardon the dust). I used Tamiya Acrylic Japanese Navy Green and Japanese Navy gray as the primary colors and finished it off with Testors Dulcote. The kit went together very well and turned out nicely. If you have any questions. let me know.
Sturzkampf, The kit only comes with the marking shown and the plane can only be built as shown OOB. If you want to do a little kitbashing, the instructions do show how the main wings and tail fold to fit in the submarine hangar. With a little work with a razor knife and saw it would be relatively easy to convert it to that configuration. As far as paint conversions, I can’t help you there. I only use Tamiya paints and am not familiar with what other companies offer. Sorry.
I have a fold out supplement to the Nov/Dec '01 issue of Air & Space/Smithsonian that shows details of both the a/c and the I-400 Class sub. It’s 24 X 36 in.; too large to scan or I’d send it. Best bet is to look for it through A&S’s web site. Hope this helps.[2c]
I remember seeing that when I visited a few years ago. It struck me as strange, simply becuase I’d never seen it before. There were very few Japanese aircraft (in my understanding) that had radial engines, and very few that had those types of floats. Together? Even rarer.
It was only much, MUCH later that I learned of the very interesting story behind it. Leave it to me to pick out some of the strangest aircraft out there and not even know about it!
My dream is to do a 1/72 dio with three aircraft on a scratchbuilt submarine. It’d be even better if I could build the entire sub (sort of like that entire aircraft carrier scratchbuild I saw a while back…). But that would be crazy, right?..
Well, Tamiya does have a 1/72nd scale version of the same kit and Revell already makes a 1/72 Gato and U-boat, Maybe they will do I-19 next in 1/72? [:D] One can only hope!
