Do any of you folks no where I can find some photo’s and descriptions of exterior and interior parts for the AH-1G Huey Cobra? for example what is that bump on top of the doghouse behind the rotating beacon? I’m assuming it is some sort of antenna. I’m trying to do a build-up article for this cobra to share with you and I want to be as accurate as I can. I build only helicopters that served in the Vietnam War and have recently been commissioned to build 4 Huey’s in 1/35 scale that served with the 174th AHC Dolphins and Sharks in Vietnam. I have been invited to attened there annual reunion in May of this year where the models will be auctioned off at there banquit. I would love to show some pictures of my work to you folks but I can’t seem to get my photos to upload in photobucket can someone help me out with this?? Anyway thanks in advance for any help.
Keith: happy to help if I can. You are, I think, looking at the upper FM sense antenna used for FM homing. I was an AH-1G IP in Nam and will help if I can. Be gentle as its been a while but I am still current in F Models.
The “bump” in question is actually a vent for the engine oil tank which sits directly below it. The bump is oval shaped with the back end cut off. (Think of a scoop turned around backwards.) to create a negitive air flow, exhausting hot vapors from the cowling. As an aside, the oil tank is rubberized much like a self sealing fuel cell and is accessed through a small door on the right side of the fairing for servicing.
