I’m making the rounds tonight to let as many folks know as possible that I am closing down the web magazine for good at the end of this month (August). So, get your downloads on your favorite vehicles soon.
This is devistating news to armor modelers who have relied on Mike’s outstanding photos and commentary to super-detail their armor interiors. I have already downloaded quite a bit of information and wanted to let others know that they might want to do likewise.
This is very sad. AFV Interiors is hands down one of the best reference sites for both
WW2 and modern AFVs. I’ve used it many times.
I’ll make sure I download as many of the pages as possible in case I ever build models of those
AFVs.
Maybe someone with more spare time and/or bandwidth would be able to carry on Mike’s work. (NOT me unfortunately,
I don’t even think I have the webspace for all those pictures, let alone the bandwidth)
Would he mind if someone else used his pictures and text on their own site?
I wonder how he’d feel about it beng mirrored? Wouldn’t be that hard to do. I’d be willing to do it if he gave permission, as long as one or two people helped me out. We could stick it on a free-hosting site like Tripod. Anyone with html skills game to assist?
A tip on easy downloading of text and pictures from AFVInteriors for those who want to do a fast download. (Only for those who are not yet aware of this easy procedure…[:D])
Go the the page desired. When the entire page have been downloaded to your computer (meaning all pictures and texts are showing already)…Click File in the upper left corner of the Internet Explorer window then click Save As.
Choose Webpage, Complete (Htm, Html) in the “Save as Type” option box and choose the location where you want to store your file.
Then hit the button Save.
This procedure will enable you to download the Htm or html file (where the text and description are located) as well as a folder housing all the pictures on the page.
Once downloaded, you may click on the Htm or Html file and it will open like an ordinary web page from your browser including the pictures. This will may it look as if you have the AFVInteriors site in your hard drive.[;)]
This will certainly beat saving the pics one by one.
BTW…the site takes about 200Mb of space only and with broadband…about 3 hours to download factoring in the human factor for changing pages, making new folders, etc.
i have never seen this site before, sad that it wont be around for much longer. i might be able to help out with the web site, i have some experiance with dream weaver (a program used to create web sites) it is what i used to build my bf1942 mod site, teh free site i used has no banners and no pop ups until u leave the site, and then a pop up comes up behind the internet one advertiseing the free site page. you can see my site at the bottom of my post next to profile. the great thing about dream weaver is that you can make it in text, and woziwig (sp? basicly you can see what you are doing).

i followed your tip above, and set up folders for the different nations,
and within each a folder for the vehicles.
the ‘save as’ function created new subfolders for each page,
(like stug1_files, stug2_files, etc)
where i thought that the image files would go.
but after i was done, the new folders were empty!
the images did not copy to them, even tho when i was saving,
it looked like they were !!
so now if i look at the page on my PC, i get the dreaded red x for each pic.
any ideas?
i was going to make a cd of the pages for personal use,
but i cannot get the pics to download in the manner Dwight advised.
they just don’t seem to copy to that directory.
Here’s what I did, I followed Dwight’s suggestion but make sure you check “make page available offline” then I had to click on each link of the web page then after you get a new page click on tools then synchronize. That copies each page link to your local drive so you can view the web page offline. Hope you can follow that.
