I started reading “Street Without Joy” and the author describes French use of JU-52s in Indochina until about 49. I found this fascinating from a modelling point of view. Besides the Panthers that were posted a while back, and the Syrian Panzer IVs, is there any other ex-Wehrmact gear that wound up elsewhere after the war?
Don’t know about the ex-Wermacht, but recently saw on the news that Allied DUKW were being used as tourist bus in the US (Florida)
Ever hear of the Volkswagen?
The ones I am familiar with are mostly airplanes- the French Ju-52 and Feisler Storchs, the Finnish and Israeli use of Bf109s (ironic) and the Spanishi use of the He-111 and Bf109 with RollsRoyce Merlin engines. I think the Swiss used Hetzers after the war too.
Hetzers were used in the swiss army until sometime in the 1970’s. The ISU 152 ??? was kept in production for quite a while after the war.
Bill
Duck Tours operate in Boston and after both the Red Sox’s World Series win and the Patriots Super Bowl wins, the teams went on a parade through the town in those multicolored WW2 DUKWs.
Sweden used ex-German equipment after WW2 as did France (Panthers).
The United States used V-1 Buzz Bombs and V-2 rockets in the development of rockets and missilery.
The Swiss kept the Hetzers until they replaced them with the S-tank series. Also the Israelis rebored alot of KAR 98s to chamber .303 to be more compatable with their Enfields. These Mausers arent the safest guns to fire anymore.
MM 23T, Yeah, the VW Ive had a few of those!!!
Anymore of the vehicle or aircraft catalog?
i think the french used some halftracks
The Czech People’s Army used old 250 and 251 halftracks for a number of years after W.W. II. One of the Tankograd Gazette issues had a photo series on them.
dont forget the Czechs with licenced build Avia S-199
they used Pak 40s in Vietnam
I guess that just says something about the Germans design, or the country’s lack of good designs.
The Czechs also toyed around with a flame-throwing tank based on the Hetzer in the late 1940s to mid 1950s. Hetzer body, armor plate over front gun opening, conical turret on top. Only a few prototypes were made though.
The Czechs keep their factories busy after the war by re-building many German vehicles for sale to many other countries
The French actually continued to manufacture the FW190A-8 after the war and operated the type as the NC900.
I just read about Brazil using Stuarts after the war.
During the war in the Balkans in the 1990’s, I remember seeing photographs of
MG-34/42’s and Flak 38’s. A Concord book also has pictures of Bren guns being used and a Model 1916 Lewis machine gun also being used. WW2 U.S. M36 Jackson tank destroyers were also used by both sides.
Swiss Air used JU-52’s for quite a while after WWII.
DUKW’s are still in use in Washington D.C. and the Wisconsin Dells as tour vehicles. They are still used in the amphibious role.
Not really, US equipment was used long after WW2. In fact some old US tank destroyers were still in use in the Balkans during recent conflicts there. At least one was brought back to the US for restoration.
In a post war world, many countries are trying to get their economy in order. Military hardware becomes low on the list of priorites. It does not produce anything and just uses up limited resources.
Many equipment becomes excess, especially the loser’s. The winners send off excess stuff to lesser countries as a way to provide them some economic assistance.
