Well I recently bought my first Tamiya kit, a 1/48 P-47 Razorback for the 8th AF GB and was just wondering something. All the reviews I’ve read on the kit say the decals are thick and have trouble settling down. My question is this: is micro sol and micro set adequate enough for thick Tamiya decals or do I need something stronger?
I used aftermarket decals for my Tamiya P-47 (there are some great ones out there!) but did use a few Tamiya decals that seemed to be missing from the AM set. I used Walthers Solvaset on those. It just seems stronger than the MicroSol/Set… to me anyway.

I’m wanting to build Mahurin’s aircraft and am not seeing any AM sets out there for it, so I plan on using the kits decals
There is another way to get them to settle down that doesn’t involve a solution.
Basic idea is to use steam, cover the part with a soaked cloth and heat it gently with the iron.
Seen 2 different methods of doing it shown in the “Plamo Tsukuou(Let’s build Plastic Models)” TV-Series. Will try to remember which episode it was and link to the upload of it on Youtube.
back when I was hot and heavy (still heavy[whstl]) in aircraft…
Advice on Tamiya Decals - Don’t use them.
I’ve used Tamiya decals with the Microscale setting solutions & they worked out OK. Solvaset may also work, but use with caution.

Solvaset works for me with Tamiya decals.I think the problem is the thickness of the decals can not be set well by decal set solutions,
Wow… This might be a rarity but I just completed Tamiya’s 32nd scale F-16 and used only the kit decals…
The decals worked like a gem and IMHO, they looked as good or if not better then the AM decals.!! I only used micro set n solvaset… Did not look thick nor did it have any silvering…

That’s good to know, Mike, because I plan on using the kit markings for my He162.
Your very welcome Rudd…!! COme to think of it, I did use micro sol before I applied the decals… Then I used micro set a couple of times…
As I do, I let it sit and soak in for a bit then I apply a coat or two of solvaset as the final touch… I am interested to see how your decals go on…!!
See I think with the earlier Tamiya kits, the decals were horried to work with but with their latest kits, I hear nothiong but good news…

You used the sol first, then the set? Did you mean the set, then the sol? Just curious, as I am always looking for better ways to get decals down tightly.

Ya what you said… I used the set then the sol and this is only one time I will follow the directions… It was a typo[|-)]

lmbo… I am sure that I have done the reverse once or twice in my time[;)] One method I use and folks look at me strange…
As I am applying the flat coat… If I see any imperfections or possible silvering in the decals, I will take a new needle and poke the effected area(s) a few times… Then I would apply the solvaset right afterwards…
Wait a few minutes then AB flat again over the area… Works all the time*(knocking on wood)*
As for my 16, can I say it is done except for the engine that will be on the cart… Tags in place as well as the FOD covers…
I will send ya few pix in the next few days!! Would love to see your Viper!! As Frank said, do apologizes for hijacking your coat lol…
We do not see that much of each other now a days…
