With my Intruder project (both my return from a long hiatus and my entry into the Intruder group build) nearly complete, I needed to pick a next project from my wealth of options. A fellow modeller on another forum generously sent me a couple kits in an effort to reduce his stash; one of them was the Czech Model F3D-2 Skyknight, but I thought this one might be a bit too much to bite off for my second one back in a long time. The other one was the Hasegawa A-4E which seemed like a better choice. I also had lots of AM decals in the stash to go with it.
So, here’s the next project, going with the gray and blue:
I’ve deliberately left the very-exposed upper ejection handle off for now, lest I break it off and have it disappear into the ether. The nosewheel well, which is very nicely molded BTW, is the same piece as the cockpit tub so before sandwiching it into the fuselage I’m painting that white, and will probably attempt some detail painting of the piping and wiring there. It’s so nicely molded it would seem criminal not to.
Well, a summer loaded with official travel - and one leisure trip - certainly slowed down building, but didn’t stop it.
Earlier this week, I got the fuselage sandwiched together and the intakes installed. Everything fit pretty well with mainly just a bit of sanding required for the fuselage seam - only a couple spots requiring putty. In retrospect, the outermost ‘D’ shape part of the intakes did not need to have been painted white, as these are the intake lips and splitter plates. In the world of modelling mistakes, however, this one will be easy enough to fix. I’ve since added on some other bits to the fuselage (scoop intakes, fin cap, etc etc - not antennas, but stuff I’d want to have on before painting).
I’ve already moved on to the wings. The first outer upper wing half fit practically flawlessly; the second one is clamped and drying now.
still, any time you are working on a Skyhawk, it never hurts to see what David has to say about either the kit or about the decals, if he has covered them, that is
