ADGZ Ace 1/72 WIP

Here’s a pic showing the state of things after a day’s ‘work’:

It’s a typical short-run injection model kit from Ace, of Ukraine. With a bit of work, I think it can be turned into an excellent replica of this quite awesome vehicle…

The hull is in two main parts, top and bottom, and the joints on the sides of the hull are not too neat. I’m in the process of re-building those, courtesy of Magi-Sculp. The kit comes with all access doors closed, but the top halves of the doors should overhang a little, so I have lengthened those a little. While I was opening up the radiator louvres, which are normally open on the real thing, but unfortunately closed on the model, I opened up a door as well, to give me a slightly more dynamic look at the end. The radiator openings were subsequently ‘closed off’ from the inside and a little bit of fine PE mesh will provide some ‘detail’ inside.

The turret consists of 5 parts whose fit is quite attrocious. I cut open the roof to allow for the main hatch being open.

A lot of the detail is ‘soft’ and needs being scrapped away and re-modelled altogether.

But, given its shortcomings, I must say ACE seem to have got their dimensions right and the distinctive shape spot on. In particular, the shape of the access doors looks right: I have two scale drawings of the beast, including one published not that long ago, showing them wrong…

The plan is to build the kit as an Austrian machine, as their only other users were the SS, which I just don’t do… That is unless I can find any info on the ones captured by the Soviets, or, reportedly, the Bulgarians… If anyone has any info, I’m game!

The little one is a 1/144 scratch of the same vehicle, which I’m building at the same time.

Nice! I love scratchbuilding and rare projects, please continue posting these!

Thanks, Beav…

Things are progressing, albeit slowly!

The latest problem was to re-build the ‘corners’ where the side plates of the hull meet the glacis plates. I needed very straight lines between the plates, which the soft ACE plastic and approximate fit did not offer… Milliput was used to re-sculpt those areas, as it offers enough strength to withstand abuse from the knife and sanding paper!

Now that this is done, I can start the re-detailling of the kit; the door hinges have already been installed.

On the 1/144 master, the shaping of the bottom of the vehicle is just about done…

Good luck on this beast!

I tried recently to build the ACE 1/72 Waffentraeger, and justgave up–the plastic is the consistency of cheese, and the detial just atrocious! The barrel was more twisted than a corkscrew!

These kits are not even up to Airfix quality in my books!

You are to be complimented for your diligence and commitment to finishing this!

Doog,

that’s love for you… Always loved the look of this vehicle! But it’s actually the first time I’m building it, despite having had in my hands a superb 1/35 resin kit from Brazil, and started a 1/76 master about 10 years ago.

ACE kits are not the easiest. I have a serious collection of their kits in here, because of the originality of the subjects, but finding the courage to start them is the problem. However, usually, the base is decent. As I said, the commercially available scale drawings are all wrong but ACE got the shape just right, as far as I can make out from the pictures I have.

Well, let’s get back to that kit for a couple of hours before bed-time… A bottle of red wine will help.

Well I must say I am impressed!

Could you make the images a bit bigger though as I would love to see what you have achieved with more detail.

I have a couple of ACE kits in my stash which one day, I will start.

Cheers

Mike

DJ,

I completely agree with your above statement. They are not the easiest kits to build but the unusual subject matter keeps me interested. I just started the AML-60 earlier this evening and I am having some difficulties with it and others are known, but nothing that can’t be over come. I have also built their Russian SO-120 (2S9) Nona and really enjoyed that despite some fit issues.

Can we get larger photos from you? I’m not familiar with the vehicle that you are doing but I am very much interested in your progress… just can’t follow along with your small photos.

My S0-120 (2S9) Nona with build log:

Keep us posted!

Nice work, but please could you post bigger pic’s.

Terry.
