Is there an alternative to Gunze Mr. Surfacer for giving my Italeri M4A1 a proper cast hull texture? Apparently this stuff is hard to get. Nobody carries it locally, and I’d hate to pay $5 shipping for a $5 spraycan…

There is a product called Cast-a-Coat that will work for the non-slip surface.
I suppose anything you could add to a paint to make a texture would work.
you could coat it with liquid plastic cement (i use testors) then texture it with an old paintbrush with the bristles cut down ( or some other stiff brush). or i have also made texture with a dremel tool and a grinding bit. you just kinda “bounce” it around on the surface then smooth it out with steel wool. hope this helps!

cast a coat is the way to go, I have seen it on a few models and it does look good .
I prefer the liquid glue method. I simply apply it to a small area(about two square inches), let set for a couple of seconds to soften the plastic, then use my finger as a blotting tool. Once the area is completed, I put another layer of the liquid glue over it to smooth it out slightly and tone down the finger prints. Next move on to another small section. I think it comes out looking great.
I use the liquid glue and brush method. I use Testor’s glue and a flux brush I got from the welding department at the hardware store. Work a small area at a time, lay the glue on pretty heavy and let it sit a minute or so then stipple the area with the brush. Looks good without being over done.
