I am new to serious modeling. When should water-based acrylics be used vs oil-based enamels? Why are there two types?
Thanks.
I think it’s mostly a preference thing really. I prefer enamels, and use them pretty much exclusively for all my painting. The acrylics I have are for washes, though I do have some Tamaya clear paints to use for lights and such.

Totally agree with madda in regards to it strictly being a choice.
I prefer to use acrylics for all my painting. Much easier for clean up purposes.
A matter of choice…tottaly and the variety of both are still growing! I’ve been a die-hard enamel user for decades and I just recently tried Gunze acrylic with excellent results. Now I use Tamiya and Model Master paints succesfully. Try 'um both!
Happy modeling.
