Acrylic Rod Mystery

Ive read about so many people using acrylic rod for displaying their aircraft in flight. Where in the heck are they getting these? Ive looked all over. craft shops , hardware stores, even Home Depot. But noone even knows what it is. Can anyone tell me where i can get this stuff or even know what its originally used for? Myabe I need to hire Inspector Gadget?

I believe I got mine at a plastic wholesaler/warehouse. Check the yellow for plastic and acrylic and give some of those people a call.

Hey monsterarmor,
Try an industrial supply company. Check with your purchasing guy/gal at work,(if you have access to one). Look in the McMaster-Carr catalog or the WW Grainger (www.Grainger.com). I know McM/Carr has acylic rod, not sure about Grainger. Later from Cajun Country,
Mike

thanks guys , I apperciate your replys. I’ll have to check them out.

hey guys, just found a source for these rods. I contacted a few dealers that you spoke of, they had a minimum $100 purchase! wow…so, I did what I shouldve done in the first place and called a local hobby shop. Guess what, they carry rods of various diameters in stock! So, for anyone else who had my problem, check out these guys at www.aaahobby.com

I looked high and low before I finally stumbled across a good supply at my local Ace Hardware store. Not knowing if I could ever be so lucky again I picked up quite a few up them while I was there. They make great “in flight” displays!

What about acrylic sheets? Have you seen anything like these available?

CorMak,
what size sheets?
for model parts, or display boxes?
i bought a 4x8’ sheet of 1/4" clear acrylic sheet (needed parts for some spray booths i’m building).
sheet was abt $88 and there was taxy & a $15 cut charge.
(they cut 4 24x24 squares, 2 24x36 pieces and 2 10x18 pieces for $15.
said they would cut a ‘reasonable ammount’ for the charge, but they would not turn the 4x8’ sheet into 6" squares for $15!)

got it from a local plastic supply company i found in the yellow pages.

I saw acrylic sheet and rod at Michael’s craft supplies a little while ago …

Hey guys this place is the modelers best friend. Get all your acrylic rods, sheets, brass tubing, micro size stainless steel tubing, etc…etc…etc…Go to the web site and you’ll see what I’m talking about! http://www.smallparts.com/ Happy hunting [;)]

Well, for display boxes would be nice, but I’m also looking for thin but sturdy sheets for an alternative to using rod for posing planes in flight. Just an idea I have, and not even sure what type of sheet I want (type of plastic.) Just needs to be as clear as possible, take some cutting and sanding (of the edges,) and hold paint. Does the Acrylic take paint well?

Thanks.

CorMak, Click on the link above and order a mail order catalog from them. The catalog they send you will tell all the properties of the dozens of different plastic sheets they sell. This catalog is loaded with great reference about plastics and composits. Did I mention the catalog is free and they beat hobby shop prices hands down!

Thanks, Woody. Will do.

CorMak,

Once while searching for acrylic rod in Home Depot I came across their supply of acrylic sheets. I think they came in various thicknesses and sizes. Don’t recall what the prices were since it wasn’t was I was looking for at the moment but you might try there so you can at least compare prices and availability. They carried them back in the window and storm door section.
