Acrylic flat base paint and Future.

Newbie here, Tamiya or gunze Sangyo flat base acrylic I have not used as yet. Can it be mixed with future to create a matt or almost flat finish on models, if so what consistency… i believe its to flatten acrylics, cant find much info about it on net!. Can it be used as a base before any painting ie as a primer???

I’ve never read anything about using Future as a primer and probably wouldn’t recommend it. It can be used as a protective coating after painting or used on clear plastic parts before masking as it fills in microscopic defects. Also, it would then help you clean areas where it snuck under the masking. As for mixing with acrylics to create a matte finish i have not tried that. I would think it might actually give the acrylics a shine. I use Model Master Acrylics then clear matte to protect the paint more than anything.

Tamiya XF-21 Flat Base can be mixed with Future to give it a flat finish. Start with about 4 parts Future to 1 part Flat Base and adjust from there. More Flat Base makes it flatter but may also cause it to have a slight white haze. Less Flat Base starts to give a semi-gloss finish.

Presumably you could also mix it into Tamiya gloss acrylics to give them a flat finish as well, however I would be hesitant to use it with other brands of paint without trying it on some scrap first.

It is not intended to be used by itself so it cannot be used for a primer.

Thanks for the help will buy and try, also when I go to my model shop the acrylic clears are always sold quickly so thought Future or “one go” here in OZ may work…Thanks again.[^]

In addition the what MusicCity said, I have used Tamiya Flat Base to flatten Model Master Acryls with no compatibilty issues.

Actually You should be able to flatten Future with any acrylic. If it isnt working then what your trying to mix with future isnt an acrylic, no matter what the bottle says.

Earlier today I was wildly successful at flattening my Future with a steamroller on loan from a local street construction crew. Now, the steamroller was not Acrylic, but worked anyway[^]
