Acrylic / Enamel mixing question

[:)] First off I would like to say hi to everyone here. I am new to the FS Modeling forum. I have been rediscovering modeling over about the last year and am having a blast [:D]. I mainly do WWII aircraft but I am definately going to expand into other things such as armor, subs, and ships. I absolutely LOVE photo etch and the extra detailing you are rewarded with after the kit is done. Right now I am working on a 1/32 Tamiya A6M5 Zero and coming along really well so far.

[banghead]I have a simple but dumb question that I just can’t seem to find the answer to.
I do know (at least I am pretty sure) that you can put acrylic paints over enamels.
Also that you shouldn’t put enamels over acrylics…but, does that hold true even if you seal the acrylic paints with something like a laquer flat finish[?]
I mainly use enamels but due to certain availability circumstances I had to get a few Tamiya acrylic colors.

Good modeling and looking forward to hearing from you,
Wayne

If you seal with a few very light coats of flat laquer, I would think the enamel would be ok, but put the laquer on in very light coats, because it can lift the acrylic paint more easily then the enamel will.

Just be careful. Lacquer is probably one of the most aggressive solvents. The KEY is many LIGHT coats. If you keep it light, and let the coats try in between, you should be fine.

Do you think that ‘Future’ floor finish could work as a sealer betwen paints?
That wouldn’t attack the acrylics like the laquer would.

Future is an Acrylic…so it won’t attack other acrylics. But, it will have the same vulnerabilities to harsh solvents such as lacquers.

It will give you some added protection, but like Lee and Vnnie said…VERY light coats!!! BTW I like the fact that you put a P-38 instead of a P-51 up for the Americans part of your sig!!! LOL

The dabate is endless - the best way to find all this out is to take 1"x11/2" squares of styrene and paint them - prime some, don’t prime some us enamels use acrylics lay a coat on thick, brush it on, sand it , don’t sand it laquer it , future it, tamiya clear coat it, varnish it - this give you VERY valuable info and confidence in your ability to paint succesfully - it takes a little time, but is fun cheap and extremely educational. Just remember - label the backs for future refence and to see how time affects each!!!

You are aboslutely right jbatesc6, that is actually the best way to find out just exactly what can and can’t be done.[tup]
Thanks everyone for your input.
