I have a sort of quandary. My Daughter has handed us a Christmas list with only two items on it. Needless to say, those 2 are doozies. As a result, I am selling off a bunch of my remaining kits on eBay. Now here is the question. I have two remaining decent P38 Kits. One is the Academy kit #2126, and the other is the MiniCraft kit 11625. (I am not even going to bother trying to sell the 2 Revell kits. They aren’t worth the hassle of selling lol) I need to sell one of them but I have never done these kits and the packages aren’t even unsealed, so I wanted to get your opinions on both kits before I decide which one to put on the block. Hopefully between this kit and the others I have just gotten through listing, I will get enough and Marissa is a happy camper, and I don’t get my ulcer going Xmas morning. lol. Any opinions from folks are highly appreciated.
I have different variants of each in my stash. The Academy P-38 is a nicer more crisply detailed kit. As I have not yet built either one I cant say about fit or ease of build.
in my family it is considered rude to ask for a high-price gift and actually expect the person to not only get it for you, but to have to sell things to get it!! Get her something that comes from the heart and wont break the bank. IF she gives you trouble…well, you are a parent aren’t you?! Tell her shes should be glad to have a family who cares enough about her to buy her gifts in the first place and that she got anything at all. Parents are in charge, not kids!
Normally I would agree with you, but in this case, I really want to get her what she asked for. She has ADHD and still managed to get on the honor roll at school with an A average. For her this took a LOT of working her butt off. Plus, she has only asked for 2 things, and if she had more on her list, I would have ended up spending as much, if not more, for a bunch of smaller items. There are no kids her age where we live so once she gets home from school, she doesn’t get to go out and play with friends, so I want her to have something fun to do. 14 is a pretty tough age even if you DO have a lot of friends. In short, she has definitely earned what she asked for and we DID ask her for a list.
I am not familiar with Minicraft, but with Academy kits you might need AM decals. The decals that come with Academy are notorious for being a PITA. That might be something to consider as well.
Nice kit. I built the 1/32 scale kit from Revell last year. I had to reshape and sand the wing halves, the engine cowlings, and even the tail booms to get a decent fit. I wasn’t happy with it at all. I ended up giving it to my Daughter who is developing an interest in modeling. She hung it in the air over her 16" Godzilla and made fake Death Breath going towards it. She is very creative. I have 1 remaining Revell 1/32 kit and one of the 1/48 kit. Maybe the ones I have doen are just from bad lots. Or maybe it’s just the old tooling has issues. Who knows?
If you want to nit-pick the kits, Revellogram does have issues, but with carefull fit cks and some sanding( really not that much) they fit up nice, the wing tips on the 1/48 are not the correct shape, but not many notice that at all, unless your a rivet counter… the other plus side of the Revellogram is that you have 4 choices to build, the J, the M, Droopsnoot, and F-5…more bang for the $$$…
The Minicraft appears to be in roughly the same price area. I gotta figure out a few more kits to go up. Hmmm. I do have a 1/72 Hasegawa Orion… Oh well, Ill find some more.
Well… I’ll see how it goes with the kits I have up now, before I decide. If anyone wants to look at them, my user ID on eBay is “sparrowventure”. I might be putting some more up later.
