Hello All,
Hoping some one can help me out. I’m working on an Academy M-51 and the instuctions call for painting the searchlight housing and bulb (?) silver. Would both of these be the same silver color? Or would it be better to paint the housing a chrome silver and the bulb a plain silver color?
Also, they show no lense over the searchlight. Is that correct? It’s hard to believe that the light would be unprotected.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe [:D]
The Isherman had a lense over the light. Silver isn’t the best color that I can think of, but I really don’t know of a way to chrome the parabola. Maybe try Bare Metal Foil or a MM Metalizer that you can buff to a high sheen.
When confronted with the same questions, I left it of on mine. I took the easy way out.[:I]
Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies.
Scorn,
I was going to use Testors chrome silver paint and thought about just using their regular silver to give it a bit of contrast.
Matt,
You ought to be ashamed [swg][swg]. I’m not that smart. I had to glue mine on first, then try and figure out what to do [D)]
Joe[:D]
I’m not that smart either.[:D] When it comes to making a clear lense, I am very “circle challenged”.[:-^] Good luck!
Hey Matt,
Appreciate the wish for success. I’ll press on and do the best I can with what I have [sigh]. This is one of those situations where hopefully I’ll improve my modelling skills [:-^]
Will post pictures when I finish and let you guys be the judge.
Joe
I ran into the same problem with this light and several others.
I have three suggestions,
- leave it off
- use bare metal foil or “Rub and Buff” silver (apaste you can buy at craft stores)
for the “bulb” and clear acetate (aka blister pack) and make a circle with a compass, get the circumframce(or is it diameter?) using 3.14 to measeure. - make a cove using the tissue method.
Hope this helps.

Guees I shuld preview my responses and spelling
Item threee should be a “Cover” not a cove and I suggested the blister pack material for the lense.
Oooooops!
Hi Dave,
First let me say [#welcome] and thanks for your response.
I’ve already put the light on and want to leave it as I think it gives the tank “character”.
I can use the Testors chrome silver and think that should do for the dish. May be able to buff it a bit and get decent results. Think I can get a "passable’ lense made. I’ll have the most trouble with the bulb.
As I posted on another board (I’m desperate for info) I’m not sure if the bulb has a sheild over it or it it should be clear. Will have to make a decision and live with it [sigh]
Joe[:D]
Hey Dave,
Guess I need to look closer as well . Saw 10 posts and thought you haven’t been on the board that long [banghead]. Well, what can I say [XX][:I]
Thanks,
Joe
I never thought about a cover, David. I’ll have to remember that. Joe, I look forward to the pictures.
Matt,
Hope I can look forward to posting them[:I]. Don’t want to end up embarrassing myself.
Joe[8]
Don’t worry, when something does not work out for me, then I just call it “Research”.[;)]
FYI Panther the bulb does not have a cover on the Isherman.
Matt,
I’ll have some “research” to do[swg]
Scorn,
Thanks. Does that mean it is clear and not silver?
Joe
