Academy Hornet - some pics

Hi Modellers,
back from a short business trip, I read a post today on the AC Hornet. There was a discussion wether it is a worth the money. As far as I can say it really is. It is a HUUUUGE plane when its finished, but the quality is so good that even a newbie like me can build a satisfying model straight out of the box . Please keep in mind that its my first finished model after about 25 years. I really loved building it and had no real problems (only problems were my zero experience). I have tried to weather a bit, hopefully its not overdone. Hope you like the photos. Question to all: Is a Hornet with my chosen configuration of ordnance possible? I have never ever seen a real one.
Greetings to all from Germany
Gerald
PS: The pilot isn´t finished on the photos. He is just testing his new office.

Very nice the weathering is just right. I think you armament looks OK , an attack Hornet would have such a load. Great job for first finish in 25 years. JOHN

this looks good. the detail looks good.

nice yellow legs!

She’s a gorgeous lady. Maybe I’ll work up to one of those. If only my stuff turns out so well. HMMM jealous.

Love your bird, very nicely done and out of the box you say, mabe I’ll have to rejuggle the book and pick up one…

Gerald:

I am the one who questioned the cost and received a lot of really great input.

Looks like a great job with lots of detail.

MIne should be arriving in the mail sometime next week. Can’t wait to get
started.

Mark[:D]

What a beauty! I like it a lot.
the pilot looks good too.

It looks great to me… I think your weathering is just right! I’m very impressed, you did a great job, you should be very proud!

You did a very nice job! To my eye, it looks like you have been modeling for quite some time, rather than a “first attempt”

By the way, I’ll be coming over in March. Well, at least to Stuttgart. I can wait to have some really good spetaletze, (I know I butchered that spelling) and a good buttered pretzel. I’m getting hungy thinking about it!

take care, and keep the beauties coming!

Excellent job on an excellent kit!

Looks good, the kit is on my wish list. But one question? Yellow main gear struts?

Excellent build ! Really like the finished cockpit and the great weathering
on your Hornet.

Beautiful Hornet, Gerald

The painting is excellent! By the way, have you been to the Heidelberg Castle lately?

Regards, Dan

Very, very nice Gerald. You can be proud of it. I agree with the others, the result you have would normally only be acheived by someone with quite a few models under thier belt. I’ve been to Germany a couple of times and to Heidelberg in particular. Had dinner in the old castle, ( Mmmmm, Schweinhaxen!). It’s a beautiful place and the beers not bad either.

Regards…Snowy.

Hi Guys (any girls around here?),
thanks a lot for your words. Yes it is my first one, but this kit is extraordinary. And I know now what I´m speaking of, as I´m doing these “special quality” Short Run stuff now. I love them. The hornet was just a matter of browsing through the internet, reading all that reviews from more experienced modelers and try to follow their guide lines. And I think one of my biggest advantages in modeling is that I can be very patient. I was a Service engineer for years (now I´m an office guy sitting on his back and keeping his technicians running) and that was a good school for modeling (sitting in Russia and not having the right tools or screws etc). But to be honest I had to do a lot of things twice on the hornet, especially with the paint job. And there still faults can be seen, but who cares. It looks good in my office now (although I love my Fury a bit more).
@Scott53, you have wondered about that chicken legs. All I can say is that I followed the manual. Seems that this special Dragon scheme had this wonderful coloured legs. And I had real problems to paint them that way (As said above, I did it twice - the first time being awful)
@Benzdoc, I can understand your loving our Bretzen (1 Bretzel, 2Bretzen). I love them too but without Butter. Hopefully you have the time to enjoy the other “Spezialitäten”, like Spätzle with Gulasch etc.
@Dan, you like our castle? My wife is at the Heidelberg opera and they will sing the Carmina Burana at the castle in June . You and Snowy should come over to see that. Its lovely (if the weather is fine) to see the lluminated old ruins and hear that great music. And of course eat Schweinebraten before.
Thanks a lot to all
Gerald
PS Working hard on my Firefly, will show it to you when its finished

I see only one problem with you set up and possibly this models not finished? no fuel tank on the port wing? these have to be balanced for flight or youll have a very ticked off pilot flying in circles

Fantastic model! The headless pilot in a few of the pictures freaks me out, though. [:)]

Seriously, though. Everything I’ve seen on this kit is positive. It’s nice to see such an awesome model right out of the box. Don’t downplay your skill, you did a great job.

Regards,

Looks good![:D] The weathering looks just right for an operational bird. Someone questioned the yellow main landing gear: it is correct for the VFA-192 Golden Dragon birds. They paint the yellow on themselves, but for any other squad it would be white. The weapons are o.k. too. Hornets can carry many different armament loads so seeing one like that wouldn’t be too surprising. I’m going to get CAM’s decal sheet for the VFA-15 Valions blue and yellow trimed CAG bird. My display is going to have the pilot climbing up the ladder on his way to yet another mission. Now all I have to do is get past step 3 on the instruction sheet…

Very nice build. Makes me want to push the half dozen half completed models off my desk and start it.
