I came across two different versions of the box top for this kit (#1648):
One with a thin white border and less writing on the front…:
…and one without any border and with more information on the front
Is the 2nd photo the newer version? Also, beside this change to the box art, do the kits have the same contents or are there differences to the contents along with the change to the box art?

No idea but it looks like a re-brand of the same kit. I would guess new decal choice as that’s what you usually get with a re-release and possibly more weapons, I would just go for the new one.
At a guess, i would Ditto what dean says. The same kit, newer box.
The kits and markings are exactly the same.

Yes, the only difference is the top one is from when Minicraft was the Academy importer, and the bottom one is from after Minicraft and Academy split.
How does this kit rate compared to the HobbyBoss kit? Which would be considered more accurate than the other?
Both the Academy and Hobby Boss kits have their share of inaccuracies. The Hobby Boss has better details (cockpit, gear bays, wings with dropped flaps, etc) , but the Academy kit has better shapes of the canopy and nose.
I have the Hobbycraft F-111E in 1/48 scale. Has anyone here ever built this version? I wonder what the critical opinion is of this kit?
