I am getting ready to start the Academy 1/48 F16. This will be my first plane kit in a lot of years and have only built 2 1/72 kits in the past.Been lurking around here lately trying to get some ideas. This build will done oob with aftermarket decals from Super Scale.
I ain’t a rivet counter so lil inaccuracies with a kit doesn’t bother me the way it does some. If I like the way it looks then I build. Anyhow hope to learn a lot from y’all.
I built the Thunderbirds version of this kit a few years back. It is a simple kit with no build hang ups. I am no rivet counter either, so I can not vouch for or against the kit’s accuracy. When completed it will look like an F-16. It may not be the best F-16 kit out there, but it is not the worst either. You certainly get what you pay for here. Just follow the directions and you should be just fine. The aftermarket decals a very good idea as Academy decals are hit or miss.
I built that same kit a few years ago. The markings in the box were for the same wing that was in Italy flying P-47’s in World War II. It’s a pretty simple kit, not hard to put together at all. There will be some gaps/mismatches around the nosecone, on the bottom of the wings, and out back where the rear fuselage mates under the tail. They’re not dealbreakers in the least, just an fyi if those things will bug you. If you want the canopy closed, you will probably need to remove some material from the seat base so it doesn’t hit the canopy as you glue it down. Dry fit those pieces before you start gluing stuff down to ensure a good fit. Looking forward to seeing your build, which particular a/c are you rendering with your decals?
Thanks for the early advice guys. I plan on building the New Mexico Tacos version. I’m a slow builder so this may take awhile to complete.
