the smile representing my first impression … when happy to pay very lowprice for this kit, opened the box i see the no-interior details , no-gun turret details, no-opening canopy choise…
the one piece engine with his cover … i knew that this kit not famous for details but not at this level
Almost no raised panel lines, [X-)] so immediately i try to build it with tape (i know this pass have a precise name in english but i don’t know) to check almost the overall junctions :
compared with bf 109 the avenger is enormous…
after this almost seems that the pieces fit good.
Again i must to collect some reference (already finded the right arrangement of seats, cockpit, gunturret etc.)but soon without realizing it i cut away the torpedo doors…
as showed in the third pict the cockpit is really horrible [BH]
By now the challenge glove is trhow and i don’t pull back…
i’ll try to high detailing this kit withouth spend more money [:D]
It sounds a lot like my Testors F4 and SBD. Cheap kits with no cockpits. The SBD didn’t even have wheel wells. I was about to scrap them both (Several times to be honest). What I ended up doing was just putting them aside. Every so often I would see them on the shelf and pull them out. Next thing you know they were completed. The SBD is in the War in the Pacific Group build. I found that after taking a break from them I would later find something that inspired me. For some reason I can’t remember I was inspired to do some scratch building for the twin 30 Cals in the back. After adding some evergreen styrene, PE gun sites and Ammo belts it now has a somewhat presentable gun but still no cockpit. [#oops]
The F4 should be completed and posted sometime later today.
The Avenger was one of the very early releases from Academy & was based on the old Frog kit tooling. It’s pretty typical of a 1960’s kit, but far from the level of detail & quality we see in modern kits.
I see your corsair … seems to me another no-detailed kit, don’t know about the dauntless kit but the subject is one of my future target. Normally i put great attention on interiors, the avenger have a great surface to show cockpit and i’ll try to a good detailing. not in mind to use PE kits i’ll try to sustain evergreen industry instead of eduard or airwaves ( if already exist [?])
. toons of scratchs i predict.
I wait to see the corsair, my own is at good point [8D] (good hep me for the academy decals)
I builded lots of 1/72 academy kits (mig-27, p-51,wildcat, f-104, f-14, p-40, hellcat, can be forgot someone) the most part of these six feet under, used as school . the details of kits is very variable, points of perfection like f-14 (naturally not decals) and indecent like f-104 .
Seems that lots of mould went from others brans like the mig-27 think from hasegawa rectified mould, in origin raised panels , inverted by academy , the result was good.
Even the wildcat if my mind don’t fail went from frog mould, but the panel lining even in the avenger don’t seems better than typical 60’s kits. Yes no interior as some old airfix kit but panels was good.
