Academy 1/48 P-40C Progress Pics

Here are some progress pics of my P-40C, which will be marked up like Tex Hill’s #48 AVG bird.

I’ve never been able to get a grasp on pre-shading, so I’ve been trying post-shading. This time I tried it with a two color camo. I painted the base color of Dark Earth, then post-shaded it. I masked off the camo pattern, painted the Dark Green, the post-shaded it.

The tape pulled a few spots away, and I’ve got some bleed to correct, but it didn’t turn out too bad, I think. There’s a few places that I got too much paint, but I can live with it. A few spots of the brush should fix it.

I used my new Aztek 470 for this- I love the adjustment wheel! Makes it much easier than my A370.

Camo looks real good Jon, cant wait to see it finished! So you like your 470? I have a 470 as well and so far I have enjoyed using it too!

Yeah, I really like the 470. I’ve been using the 370 for almost a year, and really liked it. The 470 has so much more precision and control- and that adjustment wheel- I wish I’d gotten it sooner!

Thanks for the encouragement!

Jon,

your shading looks great! Keep us posted on the build

nice build john i built the same bird a while back but in boyington’s markings (white 21) i’ll post pics a while later. dave

The post shading came out fairly subtle, which is a good thing. Shame about the paint pull up though.

Regards, Rick

R Bolton- Thanks so much!

p51mustang- Thanks! I built the Boyington bird myself last year, one of my first getting back into the hobby. It was the Revell kit.

rjkplasticmod- Thanks so much! The paint chips will be quick to fix thankfully. Hehe… if I’d have put NMF underneath it woulda been called “weathering”. LOL

Jon-

looking good! The early Tomahawk is one of my favorite airplanes, so I’ll be keeping an eye on this build!

Nice job on the painting and post-shading, Jon! Too bad about the paint lift; what kind of paint did you use?

Mark

Jon… she looks great. Very sublte shading. NICE[tup]

Daywalker- Thanks so much! I love the Tomahawks to- those and Spitfires. You can never have enough! LOL

Mark Joyce- Thanks! I use PollyScale. I really burnish the tape down tight, and I let it sit on there for a while, so a little pull off was something I figured on. Quick touch with a brush and it’ll be fine.

wing_nut- Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
