Academy 1/350 Perry out!

Well I went by a LHS earlier to see what was new. Lo and behold, the new Academy Perry Frigate kit is in a stack there. The price was reasonable at $38, so I figured that I would do my part for the local economy and buy one. Upon opening the box all I can say is wow! This kit looks nice. Straight OOB looks like a good build, it even has all the railings molded seperately in styrene so it does not have to need PE unless you want that finer level of detail.

Can you post some pics and give us a write up onthe parts? How long is the hull?

ModelWarships.Com has a review that you can read; it looks nice. I wish I weren’t snowed in this weekend…

This will be a must get. I served on FFG-11, 12, 20 and 23, all short hulls.

Has anyone heard about aftermarket PE or an appropriate number jumble to let me build one of the ships I was on?

Iron Shipwright is selling their decal sheet from their resin & brass short-hulled Perry separately of the kit.

I would imagine that if you wrote Jon Warneke at ISW and asked he would also sell you the photoetch from the set.

As far as the other ‘usual suspects’, they will need to get their mitts on the kit to measure & trial fit before they can release one

Here are some pics of the kit: I did notice in the “parts not to be used” what looks like an add on fantail and second different flight deck. The railings are a bit on the thick side when compared to PE, but straight OOB, I really like the look of this kit. Now mind you, I know very little of these ships, just what I have read in a few books.

Thank you very much for the info. Does ISW carry the correct helecopter as well? [8D]

No, but you can get them from White Ensign, white metal & PE

Nice! I had one of those when I was a kid.

I have just bought the Oliver Hazard Perrry 1/350 Model by Academy.

It is a highly detailed model and the parts fit very well.

The only thing that you should take extreme care with is removing the parts for the masts from the spruce they are extremely brittal and will break very easily.

I also had to replace a small setion of the forward mast due to poor moulding.

It is a very nice build.

Beau.

OUTSTANDING—never served on any FFG’s but when I served on a Newport Class LST (USS Fairfax County) we did a Great Lakes recruiting cruise (1978 or 79) with a detachment of Marines and was accompanied by OHP herself. Time for a quick seastory here. While in company with the Perry her skipper came up on the bridge-to-bridge voice circuit and told us to watch his ship. They took off at high speed for the horizon, came back, circled us and her skipper asked “what do ya think of that?” Our skipper allowed as how that was pretty impressive but that as an LST we could do something he would get in deep trouble for. What’s that? the Perry’s CO asked. “Deliberatly run ourselves aground and then get unstuck” our captain replied…After that there was only silence and static on the bridge-to-bridge tactical circuit…R Martin (oldsalt)

my brother served on the mcclusky. i picked this up and am working on it for to gift him on his birthday. i got till september. it is a very well done kit, and gives you several options to outfit it.

edit: there’s two flight decks and the extended fantail to build either the long or short version. i think they lengthend the newer ships.

Any WIP photos?

Not here. Mine is in my stash, in the “on deck” pile. I want to get a simpler ship built before I tackle this one.

Mine’s waiting for the GMM PE set.

PE set coming from WEM.

I have also starting building the Perry also. Very nice detail, but be very careful. There are over 400 parts to the Kit and some of them are very small. It is a time consuming build and I would suggest a set of magnafiers would not go astray with the build. The parts fit well together, but take your time and you will be rewarded with a beautiful model.[BG]

Can’t wait to get mine!

So how does it compare to Dragon / DML and Trumpeter’s 1/350th kits?

Thanks

The Kit is just as nice as DML or Trumpeter.Detail is crisp, especially on the bulkheads. Be careful lining up the mast and antenna mounts. they are made up of 4 separate side pieces topped by a platform. Very fiddly but worth it . Whoever wishes to build the kit should not be dissappointed.[8D]
