Academy 1/35 M4A2 Marines

This is my latest completion, the Academy M4A2. A pretty decent kit. I replaced the wood siding with real wood (airplane plywood from the LHS), and the sand bags and tarp were homemade (2 part epoxy putty and tissue paper respectively. Let me know if I need to fix or change anything

Awesome Jason!![bow] I couldn’t see how you could improve anything.Outstanding Sherman. Expecting a Jarhead to pop the hatch any second!!

Thank you!! I tried to correct the kit inaccuracies as best I can, but I couldn’t do anything about the return roller arms. They are supposed to be upswept, but the kit has the level ones. I didn’t have any spares and was trying to do this OOB (which went out the window when I found out that this tank did not have the same wood armor as provided in the kit). Check out www.hardcorpsmodels.com. They have some awesome reference pics of Marine Shermans and AMTRACS

Great great model. Looks real good. Can I ask, is there a particular name for tha two tone camo paint job?

I haven’t seen a name to it. I think it was just a field applied airbrush job. That scheme is why I chose this version. I thought it was different- a little departure from straight up OD green.

Very excellent build. Thanks for sharing.

regards, Rick

Jason,

Excellent!! Love it.

Looks great to me. I would not change anything. i really like the weathering and details.

[:D] great job,the real wood looks alot better then the kit wood, nice job.[:D]

OH MAN! that’s just one kick ****** sherman!
Will I be seeing that at APMS this weekend? [^]

Great job, Jason. I like the camo scheme. Not the usual, I should say.

Great job as usual Jason.

That is excellent. What kit should I go for at early european theatre of war. i.e after d-day
kenny

Sweet Build Jason. Great work on the camo and weathering.

Ted

Thanks guys! No, I won’t be taking it to AMPS. Scared it isn’t AMPS material!! Plus I have a 5 hour trip and there will be kids in the car. That equals battle damage

Dragons M4A1 “Early” isn’t really an early and has the decals for 43-44 Italy
Tamiya’s M4A3 75mm and 105mm have Battle of the Bulge Decal options
I will double check the decal instructions at lunch and get you specific info if you are building right out of the box.

Great job on the Marine Sherman. Bryan

Really fine, Jason. I feel you have made one terrible mistake, though. However, you still have time to correct it…I think it’s definately AMPS “material”. You need to give it a go. You never know until you try! (Maybe pics of it will wind up in FSM!!)

Super job Jason! really like the job you did on the camo. That alone would certainly get some notice at the AMPS show you are going to attend. Thanks for sharing with us. Semper Fi, mike

With all the praise the kit has received here, you doubt it is AMPS material? Sounds like you don’t trust folks’ opinions here. One Sherman tank that can be securely stored in a shoebox sized container would not be that hard to transport safely.

AMPS uses a gold/silver/bronze medal award system versus the standard 1st, 2nd, 3rd place system. There can be any number of gold, silver or bronze medals awarded in any one category. In case of the 1/2/3 system, generally only three kits in a particular category will win an award.

A kit entered in a G/S/B show has a statistically better chance of receiving an award than a kit in a 1/2/3 show. Don’t use the “not AMPS material” excuse. Any properly built AFV kit is AMPS material.

Now if you pick up the stance that you build for yourself and not for competition, remember, if no one brought model kits to the show, there would be no show.

There are logistics involved when entering a show, especially when traveling long distances with family. If you enter, you have to wait around for the whole show and the award ceremony. That’s understandable and is a hassle that you may not want to deal with and force the family to go through. This is a reasonable excuse, not a “not good enough to compete” excuse. That is a cop out.

Please don’t take this as an attack on you or your model, you’ve done a fine job with it and deserve a chance to show it to your peers. You’ve obviously put a lot of time and effort into it.

Think of this as more of a friendly “kick in the pants” attitude adjustment that you do build kits good enough to take to shows.

I’ll delete this post after I’m aware that you’ve read it since the backlash that will ensue will endear myself to the assembled masses.

Jason, damn, what a build!! Definitely a good looking Shermie! It’s good to see one in camo, not just the standard fare OD.

  1. Great job on the wood planking. Good choice to replace it with the real thing
  2. The tarp is excellent, but I like the sandbags even more. I tried myself a couple of times, not sure what it is that I’m doing wrong
  3. The weathering and overall finish is beautiful. Dusty, yet subtle. The streaks on the back of the exhaust outlet (don’t know the proper name), along with the nicks are, well, they’re just superb.
    Tips, hints, please? [:D]
    Great job!!!
