About time to get back to the C-47

This one has been sitting on my “back burner” for far too long. It’s Monogram’s 1/48 C-47 “Skytrain.”

I was having trouble confirming the location of the intakes above the engines. They didn’t fit well, so I sepatated the back from the front. The front fit well, but I had to file an angle to get the back piece to fit flush.

This morning, I started masking the windows. This took about ten minutes with Scotch frosty tape. I then masked off the Invasion Stripe areas, and sprayed the white. The areas to remain white were masked, and I sprayed the Neutral Gray (color od Eagles acrylic). The fabric control surfaces were masked off, and a lightened Netural Gray was sprayed on them. I then masked off the bottom, and applied the OD (Model Master enamel). This was followed by Faded OD (Model Master enamel) on the fabric control surfaces. The black portion of the Invasion Stripes was next, followed by the de-icer boots. Plenty of touchup was needed along the way, and I still have to touchup the whites of the stripes. That’s for another day. The marathon painting session is over for the day.

Here’s how she looks now:

It’s been a while since I posted pics, so here’s a “refresher” for the interior: http://www.pix.prettyneatinc.com/c47build.htm
I have some Eagle Strike decals for it.

Hey Bill,
She sure is coming along…!!! The lighting of the paints that were used on the fabric hit the spot. Nice touch…!!
Once all is done, are you going to do any sort of work with photo shop with this build??
Thanks for sharing…
Flaps up, Mike

See now this is a plane that looks great in green… [:D] I gotta dig mine out and try and follow your example. Looks great Pix

very nice build so far pix, its looking good.

Thank you Butz, Awood, and 9x19mm !

Butz - this will be on a tarmac base, with figures. It would be possible to put it “in flight,” since all I’d need to do is digitally retract the gear. I’ll have to see if I can do a night scene, with searchlights (Photoshop has a lighting effect for creating them)

Awood - you can find TONS of great detail pics here: http://www.douglasdc3.com/
I scratchbuilt a replacement throttle quadrant using these pics: http://www.douglasdc3.com/refurb/refurb.htm
Have fun with the kit, and clear plenty of room on your bench for it.

Thanks again !

I really like this build pix ,its amazing that it doesn’t have guns or bombs and still looks sooo cool…

Your gooney bird is looking beautiful. Can’t wait to see it completed.

That one sweet build Pix.

Thad

Nice looking Goonie. Is it going to be a June 5/6 “D Day” bird?

Looking great as usual Pix. Should be a real winner.

Regards, Rick

Thanks obiwan, Bryan, Thad, berny, and Rick !

obiwan - the C-47/DC-3 was far ahead of it’s time. A true Classic.

berny - this aircraft was part of the 89 TCS, 438 TCG, used on the night of June 5/6, 1944. I don’t know if it carried troops of the 101st, but I painted the “Screamin’ Eagle” on the figure’s shoulders.

Thanks again !

Classic aircraft!..classic build. Thanks Bill.

Jerry

Great job Pix-- I have been looking forward to seeing what you do with this one…

Touchup? where?? excellent work pix!

Looks great! I love C-47’s and wait to see more of this one, well done Pix.

Darren.

Bravo, Pix! You make this bird come to life, and I think I will do my C-47 next (when the B-57B is done). Thanks for sharing your work with us, a beautiful job, as always! And thanks for the reference links, also!

Oooh, invasion stripes! I just painted them on my current build, a P-38. And I used MM Faded OD on topside as well.

Great looking bird, Bill!

Looks good  I am doing one in 1/144 scale but not doing the sripes on it.

Good looking job on yours

How about a “Boarding Ladder”? How else would a fully equiped paratrooper get up to the level of the interior of the aircraft. I’ve got a 1/48th scale boarding ladder that is easy to build out of 1/16" scrap stock, if your interested. Just a thought.
