Hey guys, I’m in Baltimore, Md right now on a business trip and noticed on a map that Aberdeen Proving Grounds is just a 30 min drive to the north. Is this the place that has the Aberdeen Tank Museum (name?) that I’m always seeing tank photos of??? If so, this might be my LUCKY day!![:D]
yea the army ordanance museum. entrance is free, u just gotta pick up a pass at the gate, they open till 4 i think. lucky!!!
I was there last October and it is VERY cool, even if the King Tiger has apparently been sent back to Germany on extended loan, grrrr. And the day I was there, the Tiger I was not to be found, but I’m local to it now, so will be back!
Some of the tanks are scattered around the base. Unfortunately, since 9-11, the base went crazy and won’t allow vistors to travel around the base to look at the other tanks. Also, ordance school is moving therefore the the museum will close down. As of right now, the tanks are going to be left there. By the way, look around the museum and you might see Dr. Atwater, you know, the guy you see all the time on the History Channel.

Great place, must go, worth the trip

It’s actually more like an hour’s drive north on I-95. Oh and i see some fellow Maryland"er’s, I was born in B-more, and lived in Glen Burnie.
Hey, I grew up in Glen Burnie. Lived on Stiemly Ave between Glendale Elementary and Route 10. Lived there from 1976 to 1991.
The KT was sent to the Patton Museum. The Tiger I was sent to Germany.
I live in Harford County, about 30 minutes away from the museum. I’ve been there several times, the last time with my grandson who loved it. I’ll be sorry to see it go. There was an article in the local paper a month or so ago where they interviewed the museum director about the move. He said that they will probably take about 1/2 of the collection with them when they move to Fort Lee. Probably in or around 2010.
Wow! I lucked out! I hope I have time to make a trip over there today or tomorrow! I’d luv to take some pics of at least some of the armor that they have! Too bad the KT and the Tiger are gone, but I’d be ecstatic with seeing any WWII armor up close!! Thanks for the info guys!!
Word of advice. Take some water with you. There is no place to buy anything to drink. And from what I was told by the guard the last time I was there, it is okay to park on the side of the road to look at the restored tanks they have on display there. But DO NOT take pictures in the direction of the front gate.
I lived behind Harundale mall, just off Richie Hwy.
i was stationed there as an MP from 04 to 05 like above mentioned all you need is a drivers license, your registration and you can get a 24 hour pass (unless they changed it) and you can roam free around base noone will bother you as long as you dont go wondering to the secure areas. when you come in to aberdeen blvd i think it was off i 95, there use to be a panzer III in afrika corp colors on the sided of the road dont know if its still there, there was also a sherman and a stuart. but the museum itself is amazying especially inside i dont know if its open to the public but the museum boss let me in as i waas an MP and showed me all the Small arms weapons they have there about 2,000 in all from just about every major conflict. they even have a solid gold MP5 from suadia arabia which if i remeber correctly he said was worth about 2 million bucks
also check out the Elefant tank thats in an open field down that road the big railroad gun is parked at. the elefant is sitting in an open field. 1 of 7 actually still in existance today.
also alittle known fact there is an airplane grave yard on aberdeen proveing grounds as well but it is not open to the public since its behind the secured fence. they have about 15 f105 thunderchiefs a few of the original AH-6 cobra attack helicopters from vietnam and they have a mi-24 russian attack helicopter fully intact and operational.

heres the ELefant

I last went there in 1988,but in August we’re going to Washington to see the Mets + Nats and to see the Smithsonian.I finally talked the wife into stopping on the way home.I can’t wait, looking foward to checking out everything and getting some pictures. All of this info is good, they also have a web site.
The tanks that were along the road have been moved to the ordinance park. If you get lost and accidentally find the parade ground you with find some pretty rare US tanks including a cast hull M3 Lee.
Where is Fort Lee, and what will they do with the balance of the collection?
Fort Lee is in Virginia
