A4-C Skyhawk, Malvinas/Falklands war

Hi guys! this is just out of the oven…

is the 1/48 Hobbycraft model, the kit is poor in detail and acuracy and the decals were useless. so I try to focus in archiving a good paint job…

There are a great deal of controversy on the colours os Argentinean “charlys” during the Malvinas/falklands war, so this finish is a mix of all the info I got, the oppinion of many modelers friends and a little of my personal artistic interpretation.

I have to do some scratch, like this dorsal electronic radome (i don´t know the name) beceuse the kit´s part is a complete fantasy, and the cockpit recive a resin seat and a new control stick (the kit part have a T shape)

I also add a front wheel bay because again the kit part mmmmmm

I use a metallic primer because is great to do some chipping later and is very easy to spot any filling mistake, I use several techniques including scratching the cammo colours to show some silver paint, chipping using salt (the yellow show under the turquoise) and some washes.

The almost finished plane try to fly and the result was this:

The problem was I made some custom mixed paints to finish my model and I run out of it, so filling and sanding again was not an option, but lucky me the gaps werent´s so bad…

so this afternon I finished my skyhawk (almost, I still want to add and change some things) and take some pics to show here, tomorrow I will take new ones with daylight.
hope you like it and as usually any comment or critics will be wellcome.

best regards

Jeremias

Nice work Jeremias. You took a rough kit and made it look very nice. [tup]

Luv-it!

Your techniques have produced a super looking model!

Well done, Jeremias! Considering the crash and burn that it took and the quality of the kit, you have the proverbial “silk purse” there! Bravo!

Nice build. I never knew some of the Skyhawks had this the gray/white camo. Something new to learn everyday.

Cool look. Again, nice build!

Jeremias- Wasn’t it just a couple of days ago this model was in pieces? Man, you are fast, AND good! I like the yellow showing through the blue, nicely done. Great work as I have come to expect from you!

Good save, my friend!! Very nice…Harv

Good model Jeremias.

Why did the Armada call them Charlys?

Whats the bomb?

I like it a lot, is it ex IAF?

A4-C…Charlie

Awesme build! The camo scheme is most unusual compared to most i’ve seen. But I think it’s a real gem! Well done[tup]

Thanks to all of you guys, your coments are a motivation for me to start my A4-AR, maybe in a few week after my finals.

Bondoman: that´s correct Charly denomination is for the A4-C The C version werent used by the Armada (navy) only by the Fuerza Aerea Argentina, the armanda used A4-B with some modifications under A4-Q denomination .

The air force use also A4-B and were called A4-P

Now days the F.A.A. fly in A4-AR, this machines are A4-M but with many changes including

F-16 avionics and a new weapon sistem.

and finally the A4 were all ex U.S aircrafts (non were ex IAF, only some member of the Mirage III family), and this particular aircraft is the unit C-322 and if i´m not wrong this plane saw service in USA in VMA-224, VMA-211, VMA-242, VMA-225.

pd: the bomb is a 500 Kg (1000 Lb) dumb bomb, this kind of armament wasn´t designed for shipping atacks. they set the bomb´s spolet with a delay as they fly very very low to avoid Royal Navy detection and A.A fire, and this delay caused many bombs pass all the shipp without blowing, but is they set the bombo to explode on the first touch the risk for the plane was high for the low altitude

That is one sharp-looking Skyhawk, and I love the contrast between the camo and the drop tanks. Your effort would be a show-stopper anywhere it went, both because of the unusual camo scheme and the historical event it represents.

The best discussion I’ve found about the Argentine’s problems with bomb fusing and low-level shipping attacks is in Air War South Atlantic, by Jeffrey Ethell and Alfred Price. Published in 1983, it’s now out in paperback.

Now that’s a cool paint scheme. Really nice job overall and thanks for the history behind it. [tup]

Nice work Jeremias. The camo came out excellently. Good save as well.

Thanks again guys!!!

Here are new pics, since I change some of the stencils and add some details here and there, I still have to scratch the engine intake and exhaust covers because there is nothing to look in there.

best regards, and thanks again for your kind words

Jeremias

Very nice work Jememy…I love the cammo job. I like the putty technique…is that regular play-dough? What did you use for that?

Your focus on a good paint job certainly paid off…hot scheme! [:D]

Hi, thanks! that is UHU TACK, I use it for soft edged camo lines, you can buy it in any library, and it´s cheap
