A unique problem- Markings, Twins, and Zwillings...

I’m to the decalling stage of the Ju 290Z Zwillling (one fuselage, at least), which poses an interesting (but not life-threatening) problem. There’s really no guildelines on operational markings for this beast, so here’s where I need some help.

I already plan to put all four crosses on the fuselages (both sides of both fuselages), but I have no idea how to place the letters. I figure I have two choices- just put two on the outermost faces of the airframe, or place all four sets of letters on all four fuselage faces, just like the crosses.

Now, I’m not an expert on these things, and I have no idea how the He 111Z (the only “real” example I can use) had their markings placed. I just don’t want to have spent all this time on this kit only to screw up the markings.

(Yeah, it’s tiny. So what? [:D])

(Which raises another question- how many swastikas to use? Two, or four? I was leaning toward two, but… like I said, no idea.)

Mike,
From what I can see on the He-111Z (pics aren’t too clear) there is at least a Cross on the inside of each fuselage. Most of the pics I found were of models and they went both ways. With Crosses and letters or with no markings. Since I did see one pic of a real plane with the crosses, I would build yours that way (also easier than trying to put all those decals on both sides. I would use 4 swastikas also. But then, it is your build, do what you want. Who is going to tell you that it is wrong?

I go with gut feelings a lot, and my gut says to put luftwaffe crosses on all four sides, swastikas on all four, and unit letter/numbers just on the two outside parts. This is based on zero photographic evidence; I just thought if one were flying along side the aircraft (fighter escort) then one would care what the unit markings were. If one were enemy combatant and attacking from oblique angle where the theoretical inside unit markings were visible, one wouldn’t care unless one saw the cross and swastika. Phil is right however, it’ s your colossal labour of love, so go with what feels right to you.

Thanks

Matthew
