A shop vise

Hello!!

While working on La Pinta, my second wood model, I am finding out that a wood model has a lot of very small parts, I am finding out that it would be nice to have a nice quality small vise to hold things in place while I work on them, so:

Can you guys recommend a good modeling vise of good quality at a reasonable price?

A small machinist’s vise is handy. They don’t clamp easily to a workbench, but they are heavy enouph to work on small parts. I also have a vise similar to those mentioned ealier, clamped to a corner of the bench.

Micro-Mark has a variety of small vices for model builders. Have never had any problems with any of their products.

Promise not to laugh?

I have a scrap sink cutout on my bench, From a Corian Countertop. It also has a re-used Tempered Glass top that was a door from one of those large Stacked home entertainment SystemsWhy all this? I bought a Vise that came with extra hard rubber jaw covers from Harbor Freight. It has a Suction base. It has been in place for nine years now and never popped loose. It swivels and tilts just like the vise you pay more for in the Micro-Mark Catalogue!

I checked the vise you recommended, it looks to be very nice, however I am unable to use it because the top of my workbench is made of plywood and on top I have a piece of cardboard and the suction base of this vise will not attache to it.

I finally purchased a vise from amazon, that looked nice, when it received it, I found it to be bigger than I wanted but, still usable. Here is the link:

Glad you found one that works for you. I rarely use the suction feature on my vise. Its heavy enough to stay in place on its own with most things related to modelling. The rubber of the suction cup gives it kind of a no-slip quality too.

Note;

The suction feature is not without problems for those without a smooth surface. There is a solutiion though. Go to Wal-Mart or a Cooking supply store. Find the heaviest sheet pan(Cake or Cookie) You can.Now clear a place on your bench. Put the pan in the area and sit the vise in the center. Lock it down! Now you not only have a place for it, But you have a catch tray for the debris from whatever you used the device for!
