It’s been a while (been havin’ an eye problem) since I’ve put a project up, so I thought I’d drop in & try a wip to give some insight as to how I do things….
…never done that before.

This will probably be the one and only time. Be patient, I tend to skip around a bit to break up the boredom but it always comes together.
I’m notoriously slow and I have a tendency to get so involved with what I’m doing that I forget to take pictures; so kindly try and bear with me, I’ll eventually grind it out and I hope it doesn’t get boring for you.

Hey, (as a bonus) by doing a wip you can see I’m not hiding flaws under the guise of mud and heavy weathering.

With Tasca bringing out their new offering next month, I’m wippin’ out the Sherman M4A3E2 76 mm Assault Tank (more commonly known as the “JUMBO” in postwar terminology).
Wonder if I can bring this one off, who knows …
I might even win the race to the Rhine.

All the components used here are an accumulation of various parts from about six different kits and random discoveries over the past couple of years. The turret, mantlet, upper and lower glacis is resin and was found in a box of loose pieces from an estate sale.

First off, in keeping with the idea of just using parts and pieces that I’ve had for quite a while, the weight/load factor on the suspension arms won’t be perfect, but they will be VERY close. I’ll address THAT issue in more detail later on.

Starting out relatively basic to begin with.

Since I used the Tamiya upper & lower hull I needed to add the sponsons they somehow failed to provide in this kit.

Below is a picture after installation.

Anyone who has worked with Tamiya Shermans knows that attention is needed with the weld profiles on the upper hull.
I used sprue & glue.

Here’s a closer picture of the weld rework before the scotchbrite. It’s actually fun and can get somewhat addictive.

Well, this should be a treat, especially when you start the weathering process. [;)]

I like those weld beads. [Y] The idea is to soften up the plastic and then rework it?

O.K. dude…man ya got me psyched up ! I am 100% positive this is gonna be real special…yer givin me goose-bumps, Steve!.. welds look perfect…it’s like opening a fine liquor or turning the cover to your favorite book…finally another DM build !

Holy cow! A Shermie WIP! We don’t see this often here in the German infested forum. I have a Tamiya set so I will be following your WIP. A tip for you… best deals on toilet papers can be found at Sam’s Club if just in case you need more!

Thanks for the approving feedback and support here. It’s nice to finally have something going on the forum besides just my usual smiley hijinks.

This is probably gonna be a loooong ride here but I hope you get a kick out of it. I guess you could say I’m doing this with one eye tied behind my back.

mushrooms ? what is this ? 1969 ?.. I bet you could make mushroom caps into scale ‘leather’ or somethine cool and really weathered looking…

This is all basic stuff to many of you but there are probably some guys out there that might not understand.

Here’s where I want to go…….

Got out my 2 year-old bottle of green squadron putty/laquer thinner - an old paintbrush, added some fresh laquer thinner…
…………… then off to have some fun.

and here’s where I went

!http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-fc/bottle.gifSqueeze a marble sized glob of green into a paint bottle, add a somewhat equal amount of laquer thinner, stir it with a METAL rod (never-ever shake it because you’ll never get that bottle open again).

Keep it off’a the bottle threads.

Mix to get a damp toothpaste-like consistency.

(Don’t TRY to breathe this mixture and you’ll be okay. It doesn’t take that long to do this. Put the lid back on when possible. The mixture in the bottle can be re-constituted and re-used over and over again).

Coat the targeted area … a minute of dry time and give it a rough workout with a small wire brush…. it don’t look good? Brush a bit more Laquer thinner and work it (yep, it’ll stick to the resin).
Random Jab, jab, poke, poke …. jab… ( sorry doog !http://th272.photobucket.com/albums/jj182/Lord_Kryn/th_Poke-tonguesmiley.jpgno brapping here) poke, jab.

If you don’t like what you’re seeing, add a bit more of the mixture and rework it to get to where you want.

Next to the human hand, the most fantastic TOOL ever created.

This texture session is done over a resin piece so you don’t have to worry about melting the part.

If you use this on styrene it WILL work just as well but needless to say, you must be VERY careful since the syrene will melt.

The process continues around the sides…

Just like the welding action, this can get addictive also; it’s actually fun.

Reminds me of playing with Clay in the first grade.

…and on across the bottom… of the part… uh, dern… you know what I mean.

Might look a bit severe now, but when the paint goes on………….MAGIC !!

Give it 24 to 36 and lightly buff it over with some scotchbrite.

I didn’t drill out the 20 bolt holes along the top - never gonna be seen , don’t tell anyone, OK?

(but without the bright FLASH)

I drilled out the holes in the shackle mounts; that 90 degree turn is a lot of fun.
Just for the heck of it I thought I’d add some casting numbers (numbers and letters were razzored off a various sprues and laquered onto the part) even though the mud is gonna be the star here. Good practice anyway.

As I said before, a LOT of the minutiae I’ll add won’t be seen due to the weathering effects that will be applied.

Next time…
