I’ve purchased some gunzesangyo matte base. Being a bit nervous about doing the wrong thing on my almost completed t-34 i wanted to ask what proportions of matte base to clear gloss i should use for a satin finish and a complete matte finish.
Also, how do i then effectively apply the matte/satin coat with my airbrush without a milky white affect occuring?
Any help would be much appreciated.
I’ve had great success thinning Testor’s Dull-cote with lacquer thinner about 50-50. No milky white clumping. Another very skilled armor-modeler I try to emulate said he thinned Humbrol Matt Varnish, their version of a matt clear, with lacquer thinner also. I don’t remember the ratio. Am planning on calling him to find out.

If it is matte BASE, you have to thin it way down. I’m not familiar with Gunze, but I think it’s acrylic. If it is acrylic base, you can use Future and try 2/1 Future to base. Whatever you try I would suggest testing it on a piece of scrap first. Any dullcoat I spray I’ve found several light layers work so much better than trying to “getter’ done” with just a couple heavy ones. Of course that should go without saying for any airbrushed finish.[2c]
padawan what were you using when the 'milky white effect" happened ?It sounds like you used the thinned matt base only and no gloss mixed in .I’d start with about 25%matt base to 75% gloss and cut that mix with about 50% thinner. If that is still not dull enough add more matt a little at a time until you get your desired effect. After each coat stand back and take an overall look at your model,to often you can get tunnel vision and put on to much dullness. You can always put on more if needed.Watch out for overspray also,it can build up in corners and give you a dust buildup. If that happens rub it off with a stiff brush and spray that area again with your matt mix.[2c]
I’ve heard good things about the gunze matte coat. Where are all the poly scale matte coat people? They usually come out of the woodwork whenever there is a matte coat question [8D] Testors dull coat and lacquer thinner 50/50 for me. Whats with all these paint questions in the armor forum lately?
First thing is to experiment on a test subject prior to shooting on the real subject.
I’ve never used GunzeSangyo matte base although I do use Tamiya X-21 Flat Base which may or may not be similar. With the Tamiya flat base, I mix it with Future in a 1:4 ratio of 1 part flat base to 4 parts Future. At this ratio, It lays down a woderfully flat finish and does not give any white crusting, even inside of corners where the falt clear mixture collects a bit more heavily. I have used these products with a 1:3 ratio of one part flat base to 3 parts Future, but with the higher ratio of flat base, a white crust would sometimes form in the corners.
I think the key items of which to be aware is 1) experiment on scrap 2) mix extremely well 3) use thin coats.
Good luck.
Thanks very much guys for giving me such helpfull answers to my questions. I’m sorry that it has taken me so long to reply, but your help is very much appreciated.
I’ll just have to try and try again before i pluck up the courage to spray the finished product!
