A question for the members

When you purchase a kit, do you follow a theme? When I buy a kit it’s nearly always of something I’ve seen. I know someone here does only USMC ac and a lot of you only do WWII. Also do you tend to pick one scale over another hoping that someday “they’ll make it in my scale”? Just curious about this.

I tend to stay with 1/48 scale WWII aircraft but, if something catches my fancy, I will get it regardless of the scale. I do not like the odd scales - 1/87 and such. With my eyes, I need to see the pieces of plastic that I am working with. I do like the Luft '46 aircraft and unusual aircraft that not many folks have seen or heard of. This makes research a bit harder because of the rarity of the subject. But then, “Rivet Counters” can’t be too hard on my rendition of the aircraft.

I usually buy (then build sometime later) what every comes to mind. Recently I bought a Hasegawa 1/48 F-16C. Most of my scales are 1/48. I have helos, WWII aircraft, ships, and modern jets. I guess I’m a variety type of modeler.[:D]

I try to stay in 1/48 for aircraft. ANd 1/35 for vehicles. But for big aircraft like bombers ill go into 1/72. I like all eras thoiugh.

I’m all over the map when it comes to modeling subjects, and about the only real pattern that I have is that I have no pattern.

For scale, although I would most typically go 1/700 for ships, 1/35 for armor, and 1/48 for aircraft, although for both armor and aircraft I have a number of 1/72, and even a few 1/144 a/c. I won’t often go bigger just because of the time to build and the ultimately limited display space that I have available. When I go with the smaller scale, it’s usually just to have a quickie build as a diversion.

For choice of what to build, I suppose that I generally stay in WWII, although I have recently built an Iraqi Freedom Bradley and Abrams and have some WWI ships and a tank in the build queue.

I really don’t have any central theme to what I build. I may pick up an old kit that I built as kid, and rebuild it as an adult out of a sense of nostalgia. I may pick up a kit for its historical interest. I may pick up a kit, just because it will look cool when complete. I might pick up a kit that I otherwise couldn’t care less about, so that I can have an excuse to try some different modeling techniques.

I am a 1/48th person - good convient scale. I model AC from the early years to now, Tho I really like the jets of the 50’s thru 70’s. I have recently taken a foray into 1/72 armor and it is interesting to say the least. I have some 1/35th armor and afv for those inbetween projects.

pretty much anything I can get my hands on. My biggest “theme” as such is airplanes - doesn’t stop me from happily accepting cars, ships, etc as gifts though!

Good question!

My mainstay is 1/48 aircraft, a 50/50 mix of jets and WWII warbirds. However, I sometimes dabble in 1/32 scale if I see a warbird in that scale that I like or 1/72 scale if it’s a certain jet that I can’t find in 1/48.

Lately, I’ve been looking at pictures of dioramas in 1/35th and after a couple of attempts I will be playing with armour and figures a lot more in the future.

I’m mainly a tread head. 1/35 armor. But I love WWII aircraft in 1/48. I was brought up around WWII vets and stories of the European conflict so that’s where most of my energy goes.

I get what ever catchs my eye,
i like a good box top (the reason i have 8 of the Fujimi 109s, they have great box tops)

Well, I usually order what I want to order[:D]…

I usually buy 1/72 a/c and armor, but soon, I’m gonna stock up on 1/48 or 1/32 a/c and 1/35 armor for cheap in ROK when I go there for summer[:D]
oh yeah, I usually stay in the modern and WWII zone. occasionally vietnam and in between, but nothing before WWII

I used to want to do it all and at one time had a good cross section of kits (in all scales), reference and related items representing all eras of military aviation. I also have an interest in targets tanks and other targets…

My interests, as a military aviation enthusiast, remain unchanged. But as an aircraft modeler I’ve settled on the years spanning from the Spanish Civil War to the Korean War; doesn’t matter what air arm… good guys, bad guys… I wanna model 'em all. I also like to dabble with WWI subjects now and again.

Modern jets (mid-late 1950’s to present day) no longer hold any real appeal to me as a modeler, with certain exceptions. These would be any aircraft (from either side) which scored a kill in any aerial conflict from Vietnam to present day. Especially MiG-Killers from Vietnam, the Libyan Sukhoi-Killers of VF-41 and the Libyan MiG-Killers of VF-32. I am also interested in the aerial combatants of the Gulf War (the REAL Gulf War), especially the Hip-Killer from VF-1. If I were to build any models of more modern subjects, than these would be the subjects I would choose from. Oh, and I would like build a VF-191 Tomcat someday…

Scale? 1/48 has been the favored scale for the majority of my modeling years, although I have built models in all scales. Until fairly recently (the last 10-15 years or so) 72nd has offered the best range of subjects and it still has an edge in this area. But 48th has been by far the most popular scale over the last 20 years and the one most catered to by the manufacturers of kits and aftermarket fixins.

Also, there is no contest as to selection of decals. Availability of 1/48 decals has always been more or less on a par with 1/72. (starting back when Microscale was the only decal maker worthy of note) But over the last decade there have been more 48th decals released than any other scale and that’s a good part of the reason why I have stuck with 48th.

I’m currently leaning toward braille scale (1/32, 1/24 and larger, though I prefer 32nd) for detailed modeling and if I ever again decide to build a show stopper then it will be in 32nd. But I will continue to build in 48th, as I have spent too much time, effort and money in amassing my collection of kits and decals to make a total switch to braille scale.

Fade to Black…

I am the same way that Steve-O is except modern jets still fancy me…[:p][;)]

I have the combo of 1/48 and 1/72 stuff, mostly planes. Looks like I’ll have to start going with just 1/48 in the near future as I think my magnifacation gear is just about finished with the 1/72. Now all I need is a lot more room.

I work with mostly 1/72 jets 1950s through 1970. Occasionally a little on either end of that time span and some 1/48 scale. I have done a few 1/25 classic cars. Once in awhile I do something with propellers. The past 8 months, I have done a C-46 and P-40 in 1/72 and a C-54 in 1/144, as well as several 1/72 Migs.

I’ll model 1/72, 1/48, 1/32 and 1/144 kits. I love the European jets and planes with colorful markings. I especially enjoy airliner kits. Fairly easy builds, painting takes a bit getting used to and decals especially windows and doors take quite a bit of time but well worth it. Great topic thanks

I guess 1/48 WW2 A/C is my main theme from all theatres, but i am very attracted to US Navy WWII carrier A/C…Occasionaly i’ll dabble in 1/35 armour and 1/350 scale ship models all WWII, but i do have a couple of WWI stringbags on the to do list…

In only build 1/72… I don’t have enough space for 1/48 kits, I prefer to build WWII aircraft, but I have some modern aircraft… and I’ve been thinking about building 1/35 WWII German vehicles… specially an Sd Kfz 234/2…

My main interest is 1/48 WW2, but I buy other scales or subjects on occassion. Whether I build them is another question [:)].

Regards, Rick

My main interest is aviation. In no specific scale, just what’s one sale. Al sorts of different subjects, from WWI to modern jets.
I sometimes build others subjects, such as Warhammer figures and tanks.

The price of a kit is very often the most important factor for buying. I only buy when there’s a sale, at swapmeets or at shows.
