I thought this was an excellent color reference shot I would share. I’m going to use it for my upcoming Tamiya 109E build. A couple of interesting points on this aircraft. first, the white background for the swastika, and second, the blended dark green along the leading edge.
nice pic Steve. I also noticed the red outline around the 8 and the whitewall tail wheel lol. I never seen a pic of anything german that had a whitewall tail wheel.
That´s one of my favorite things with this hobby, that you can check out reference material and discover small things like the white around the swastikas and then implement them into your model. I love it when I discover something like that, and it´s usually not in the instructions and it makes you take a step beynd them. For me it´s a small revelation each time.
Thanks for sharing that picture, it´s a really cool pattern.
That’s a very fun paint scheme to paint mate. Another thing for you to note is the half black, half white prop spinner. And, if you look very closely, there are four small red kill markings at the top of the rudder…
Crockett , isn’t the "blended dark green along the leading edge " actually a shadow ? It seems as though the light is comming from behind the aircraft casting the shadows towards the front of the airplane.
I’m actually making this plane at the moment so if anyone has anymore pics or info on it i would appreciate it !!! [:)]
There is also a companion shot of that same aircraft flying low over the desert (and blending in amazingly well) out there. As well as several shots of two other Es in the same scheme in formation (White 8 and (I believe) White 3.)
I have a 1/72 model of Black 8 on the shelf and only have one problem with it - RLM 79 seems way too dark. Osprey’s book on the 109E indicates that the 109s were in European Greys when dispatched and painted in theatre using existing paint stocks which were Italian supplied and Italian “Sand” was a much lighter color than RLM 79. BF109Fs & Gs were apparently painted RLM 79 either at the factory or just before being flown across the Med.
And there are shots in several publications showing the “white wall” tires on both BF 109s and BF 110s
That’s a nice pic, I thought it looked kinda familiar, check this one out, I had to pull this one before because a guy didn’t believe planes would be painted this way.
