A new E-100 for the collection! (Dragon's new 1/72 kit)

We just got Dragon’s new 1/72 E-100 in at the LHS, so, being a big E-100 fan, of course I bought one! Cheap, too (only about $9 USD).

If you’re familiar with Dragon’s 1/35 E-100, then you pretty much know what to expect. With the 1/72 kit, however, the tracks are “one-piece track link” style, done in DS…“Dragon Styrene!” It’s just like your standard belt-type track, but molded in a resin-colored flexible styrene. Just as flexible as your standard “rubberband” tracks. I kinda woulda preferred link-and-length “hard” styrene, but these look great, so no problem. Another difference is that the rear of the turret is molded as a separate piece.

You get two nicely done soft vinyl figures, but only the driver’s hatch is positionable. All other hatches are molded shut. Nowhere for the commander to stand!

The 8-per-side suspension units are each molded as one piece, as are the side skirts. An interesting feature is that the doubled-up road wheels are somehow molded as one piece, but look as though they are two separate wheels glued together, with a 2mm gap separating each wheel. Must be that magical “slide mold” technology we always hear about!

All moldings are crisp and sharp, with no trace of flash whatsoever. You also get a nice PE fret (grill screens and muzzle brake baffle).

Interestingly, all photos of the completed model on the box and in the instruction sheet show the drive sprockets at the rear and the idlers at the front! The instructions themselves, however, indicate the proper arrangement (drive sprockets up front). Can’t imagine how the Dragon staff builder missed that one, considering one mounts male and the other mounts female, and on completely different mounting systems! It would take a bit of a modification to pull that switch off, on the production kit anyway. Perhaps a bit of skulduggery was afoot!

Anyway, it’s a nice little kit of one of my favorite “semi-what-if tanks” (remember, it was nearly completed!)

Just to refresh your memories of my rampant E-100 fanaticism, here’s a coupla pix of my ol’ E from last year:

I think I will modify this new li’l E to match my old big E, and I also have the tiny 1/144 Dragon E-100, so I may do a triple-scale, triple-threat “Urban Ambush” trilogy tour-de-force!

E-100 fans, unite!

Cool, Brian. I always enjoy seeing pics of your E-100! Thanks for putting them back up. I’ll have to be watching for the 1/72 kit. I’ve got most of DML’s 1/72 WWII kits and a good bit of their 1/144, too. But I think I missed the 1/144 E-100. Got the Maus (or it’s the other way around!! lol I can never remember which!)

Wonder how long it will take to hit the shelves here.

Thanks for the heads-up review.

There’s another one to add to the list!

Cool. I’ve admired your E-100 for some time and my sons and I jumped on the 1/144 offering, now the 1/72 would be perfect size for a nice piece. Dragon used that roadwheel design on their Bergetiger, it does fit nicely together but may take some of the ‘fun’ out of building the kits (all those indentations on your fingertips from squeezing roadwheels together).

Looking forward to seeing it completed! And thanks for the review!

I will never ever ever do another maus–just be warned all of you out there, try the E-100 first, although they share the same turret, the maus is crazy with 48 seperate wheels, and 12 undercarriage assemblies to build–you don’t want the indentations i had…painfull…now i need to paint it…

I liked your tank so much, I put the first pic on a German project. Hope its ok. I found it on missing lynx.
thanks for the review!

a 1/144 scale version of your tank? have you forgotan already?!! it’s been done!

[:p]

I’m flattered! Of course, it’s OK. Unless you’re making money from it, in which case I demand royalties! [;)][;)][:D]
What was your “German project?”

Greg, yup, I do remember your li’l Urban Ambush E! [:)]

I play WWII wargames in 1/72nd scale, so I’m going to build one of these and give the Allied players a heart attack!

I hope they do a Pershing in 1/72nd. No one makes one, and you need them for the very-late-war battles, where Pershings popped up more than occasionally.

Yeah, strange there’s no 1/72 Pershing available…but can you imagine the uproar if Tamiya switched to 1/72???[;)][;)]

Boy how did I miss this post duuuuuhh!![zzz][zzz] Cant let Brian steal all the E 100 glory here [8D][:P]I like the big E as well.Funny I have the pershing 1/35 and 1/16 and was thinkin the same thing

Hey, cool, and I like your mini-men too. I like the guy peering up from the driver’s seat as if to say, “ain’t we cool in our big mamma jamma tank?”

JHulk!!!

your picture is saved on my file and on my desktop!! I love that model!!! I built the 1/144 E-100 a while ago, loved it!

LOL !!!
Ya I know that is what I would of been sayin

Thanks, Stukabomb88!

Thunder-G, it’s always great to see your award-winning E! (That’s right, folks! It’s a contest winner!) As Larry said, the figures are cool.

Thanks Brian. You know like I said before yours is what got me to get the one I have.[:D]

Let me a part of this to…

I bought the E like this:
but then I saw J-hulk`s and looked in my old box…and find some parts to use…like a conversion…

I like it nord!!! always good to see another E.

Yeah Nord, sweet E!
I like the MG34 mounted on the turret roof! Great finish, too.
