A Mustang taking off

Had this idea the other week whilst making bread at work. Didn’t work out too bad I think - the bread was nice too ;D.
Started it on New Years Eve. Thought it’d be an interesting way to show a model that we’ve all seen a million times. Rather than fill my photobucket account and FSM’s forum with loads of in progress shots you can find them here if you are interested. http://web.mac.com/dave.hutson/iWeb/themodelchef/Mustang%20Take%20Off.html
Anyway enjoy it’s a bit of fun after all

Think I may have done the yellow band a bit thick looking a it.
Apologies to all the Mustang rivet counters if I’ve repositioned something wrong I’m not an expert it just looked right at the time.

Dave I think the effect is quite striking. The LG only half way up really adds to the feeling of having just taken off. I agree thatthe yellow is a bit too stark. If the black sections where more even in size and the yellow tips where lighter…I think it would look really cinvincing. Great idet and well executed. And rivets? What rivets?[;)]

Dave that is awesome. I like the weathering and the in-motion pose of the landing gear.

Very convincing, and a wonderful display !

Beautiful weathering of the airframe & a very interesting display. Tone down the prop blur & she’s a winner.

Regards, Rick

Excellent way to display the model! Well done, too. As Marc said, the Gear half-up adds to the realism!

To busy drooling to count rivets. Really like the build! Don’t change a thing!

Very nice! I really like the look and the action.

Tiny thing. Mustangs don’t use the flaps on take off. Othern’nat very, very cool!

Love it!

Though with the controls in that position he’s likely to snap roll right into the ground…the controls surfaces are a bit too extended. Subtle control inputs are key to flying the Mustang…ask anyone who flew them. As a pilot myself, the only time I’d ever run the controls to such limits is while performing aerobatics or while manuvering on the ground to combat crosswinds while taxiing.

Your concept is spot on…I like to see as much “life” as possible in a diorama…you nailed it well!

Now that’s an awesome effect! The landing gear halfway up was a very nice touch too! But I’m really digging the spinning prop effect! Extraordinary![tup]

Thanks guys - yeah, knew they’d be few things slightly off, oh well - maybe he’s trying to avoid a tree Hawkeye ha ha ha!

This pilot says, a shade too much elevator, waaay too much aileron. [;)] But I wouldn’t expect most folks to realize just how little those surfaces really move most of the time. Your display concept is creative and well thought out. I don’t see that many in-flight displays, and even less depicting takeoff or landing.

I like that you not only positioned the landing gear partway retracted, but that you depicted them retracting at a different rate. That is a very realistic, subtle touch. Overall I say - Well done, sir!

Kevin

Nice idea. I think it looks great displayed like that. It really captures the excitment of flight and a 2000 hp Merlin screaming out power. Nice job.

Soulcrusher[oX)]

Man thats good and I mean real good!!!

Lenny[tup]

Not being a pilot…A beautiful job!

Great idea! You really captured a “Mustang moment” there! You can almost here that Merlin roar! Like the staggered wheel retraction.

[#ditto] I don’t know a lot about Mustangs, but this sure looks the business to me. Very well-executed display, my hat’s off to you! [^]

NO!! Not ANOTHER P-51!!!

LMAO!! Ahhhhh…in truth, you can never have too many P-51’s…and your -B is actually pretty cool - not very often do you see an aircraft modelled in the ground-to-air transition…and pretty well done, too…the comment about far too much pilot input on the control surfaces is a valid one, but it’s still pretty cool, and very effective.

The yellow on the prop tips isn’t too much - the prop blur is more realistic than most I’ve seen - overall, something nice to look at.
Thanks for sharing the pics, mate.

Thanks very much guys! Some very good points that I never thought about and will use them for next time cos I do have a couple of other ideas along the same line.

You gotta tell us one thing - how did you make the prop? It looks very realistic. Tell me it was very, very easy. PLEASE tell me that [D)]. Seriously, an outstanding job on it. Gives me inspiration to do a similar project. Keep up the great work!
