A Leopard 2, Challenger 2, Leclerc and an Abrams roll off the transport...

…which one would you choose as your preferred MBT to take into combat?

Thought I would stir things up a bit. [}:)][;)]

I came across a thread like this on a gaming board and thought it would be even more fun to have a group of armor enthusiasts debate this one out. I know this debate probably comes up all the time, but we’re due for a good one here. It can be a comparison of the latest greatest version of each. However you want to debate this one is fine with me.

I’m off to pop some popcorn and then I’m going to kick back and enjoy the fireworks. [:D]

I hate to say this having been an M1 Tank Commander, but it’s the Leo hands down for me. The Challenger is too slow, the Abrams burns too much fuel, and the LeClerc? - well ,…it’s French…

The Leopard 2A6 and Challenger 2 are extremenly advanced tanks but due to its good and extensive track record, I’ll take the M1A2.

Leclerc. It’s the most modern current design, incorporating lessons from the previous western MBT’s of this generation. It’s also incredibly fast.

The autoloader worries me though.

Right on the heels of the LeClerc, the M1A2.

But the real answer is, who knows? Too much about each weapons system is classified. This is the reason for my Leclerc answer. It’s the most modern, its got the newer longer gun, which greatly improves penetration, and we know virtually nothing about its armour – classified.

As to combat experience, in WWII, the Panzer II had a lot more combat experience than the Pershing. Did that make it a more powerful tank? [:)]

The Abrams as it has the most combat experience.

Would have to go with the Abrams. Been proven in combat alot more than the others.

Perhaps this gallery of MBTs will add some inspiration.
Main Battle Tanks

LEOPARD 2 MAIN BATTLE TANK, GERMANY
CHALLENGER 2 MAIN BATTLE TANK, UNITED KINGDOM
LECLERC MAIN BATTLE TANK, FRANCE
M1A1 / M1A2 ABRAMS MAIN BATTLE TANK, USA

I’m with crockett on this one, I’d like the Leo…

[(-D] An excellent point!

A sneaky… peaky …Leopard!!! By no means ruling out Abrams & Challanger.

there is only one MBT which better then all the other MBTs that you listed and it is the MERKAVA mark IV! with its 1500 hp engine, 120 mm canon and “baz” fire control computer there is no match for it!

Why only one. I’d rather be the section commander and have all 4 in my troop. But then again, I’m greedy.

Realistically, I’d take the Challenger to be a little different. You only need great speed to run away, Fuel is always at a premium on the battlefield and being a citizen of a Commonwealth country, Britain is hardly likely to put an embargo on exporting their tanks and spares to us… that and the chally proved to require far less maintenance than the M1 during GW1 and Australia is a dry dusty environment. The fact that it is way too big for us logistically doesn’t count [:P]

All of you bring up great points on the merits of all, but in my opinion battle experience can make up for alot. I will have to go with the Abrams.

One other point to take into considoration as well, Doesn’t matter how good the tank is, if you dont have a well trained crew to operate it, all you have is a multi million dollar paper wieght.

Just a Challanger? I would have gone all the way and taken the Challenger 2! [;)]

The C2 proved to have major problem in the desert during Operation TELIC, and they had to add all kinds of desertization items on the vehicle so they would remain functonal during the invasion (which of course everyone knew was inevitable, all theatrics to the contrary). This had soemthing to do with the limited goals given to the British force – no one knew of the desertization would work, or if the C2’s would all break down in the desert, as they had during TELIC. I guess the desertization worked, but we’ll probably get the full story in a few years.

Hi,
I gotta go with the Leopard… then Abrams… (the both use german guns Rein Metal) (both are hot rods and share certain desighn componets (MBT70 was their mother))
Challenger has a brit gun and it lacks the punch of the German gun.
leCleric… French armor…French gun… (neither proven)

The Panzer II had experiance against the best Russia could offer and was proved to be wanting… more armor and a bigger gun…
The M1A1 has experiance and has been proven against the best Russia can offer… and was seen to want for nothing…

Herr Gray

abrams: combat experience, a wopping .6 mph slower than the leclerc. its bigger, so it can ford deeper and go across biggger trenches than the others. the chally is just way too slow.

The M1A1 brought all my guys back from Desert Storm so I trust it. Even if it’s not the “best”, which is debatable, I read some where that a good man in a mediocre machine is better than a mediocre man in the best machine.

The Abrams. Only two have ever been “killed” in batle and in both cases 100% of crew survived. As to the kills, I think crews destroyed disabled ones to keep from enemy. TESTED AND PROVEN in real combat !!!

O.K. sorrey guys but I’m biased from obviose reasons…

Merkava Mk.IV ![}:)], Like eranpolak said above it’s the best one. REALLY the best out there. that surely be my stead for battle.[C):-)]

But if Thats really not an option, really really not an option I’d take the M1A2, proved it’self in Iraq. cant ignore it.

M1, A5 or A6, then the Chally…No wewe here frenchie.[:D][:P]
