A is for Arado.

Hello guys ,
This is my Ar-196 seaplane. Its the Revell 1/72 kit.I bought this 12 years ago
(pre-airbrush days)and it has been sitting patiently in a shoe box waiting its turn.

I started it before my kate so its a on and off build for me.
The decals use are the same as the Revell box art.
Everything is OOB except for the hypodermic needles used for
the 4 machine guns, the rigging and the foil seatbelts.
I also cut the flaps to make it more dynamic.

I really enjoyed this build and I think its value for money for such
an old kit. Also the raised panel lines does not affect its beauty.

Hope you like it and thanks for letting me share.[:p]

sorry obiwan just see the dreaded red x. sure as i post i cant see it, the pics come through. awesome looking bird obiwan.

What did you use for lighting? the lighting in these pics are fantastic. Are you using a Digital Camera? or a manual? If a manual were did you stop it down to? I built this kit years ago and couldn’t do it justice, yours looks really good.

Lovely model there obiwan! As for the camera work, don’t ask me. I just point my digital and shoot. It’s amazing I get any decent pics at all!!! [#wstupid]

Obiwan, nice looking Arado.

How is that kit?

Karl

I built the Airfix 1/72 Arado a long time ago and it looks similar to the Revell kit but your build is definitely way way better! What did you use for the rigging? Real cool!

That would look nice next to my Tamiya Bismark[:D]

That’s a beauty, Obiwan[tup]

Looks great! How was the rigging to do on 72nd scale?

I have a spit I’m finishing up in 1/72 and I’m curious as to where you got the needles to use as the guns. I could really use some of those. Will they let you buy them at drugstores if you ask really nicely?

Looks great, obiwan !

I built MPM’s 1/48 kit a few years ago, in the same markings. Attaching & aligning the floats were a nightmare. How was this kit?

So what’s next?

Great looking model obiwan. Excellent build and paint job. Keep em coming.

Great looking Arado! Thanks for sharing.

Matrixone

That’s one snappy seaplane- great work! I can’t believe it’s 1/72.

[:)]Thanks fightnjoe ,roadkill_275 ,ChrisJH666 ,KJ200 ,nkm1416@info.com.ph,
scottrc, dagne, maddafinga ,Pixilater , rjkplasticmod , matrixone and chukw.[:)]

roadkill_275 ,I use a Cannon S45 set to the smallest aperture ,no flash mode
and macro setting on.(I hope this makes sense)
I was experimenting with the lighting when I found the pictures turned out best
when the flouresent lamps were pointed upward and slightly onto the background card.(you can see this in the first picture)
Also I needed the background to be slightly lighted , so the clear parts of the
canopy do not reflect light and the framing contrasts on the background.
There was very little direct light shining on the model.

KJ200 , the fit of the kit is good except for the engine cowl to the engine. The
engine cowl halves also require reshaping as there is some distortion there.
You would need to clean up the lines where the floats join to the fuselage.

nkm1416@info.com.ph , I used black colored invisible thread for the rigging
this is available at any good haberdasheries.

maddafinga , the needles came from diabetic syringes availabe in a large
pack .They are cheap and absolutely ideal for 1/72 machine guns.

Pix , the floats went on well but the accuracy of the attachment lugs to the fuselage is suspect.Since you have done the plane with the same markings
,what ship is this plane from?I really don’t know.
Whats next?How about Dick Bong’s P-38L?

Again thanks to all[:I]

I too am surprised that this boat is 1/72- looks more like 1/48-great job. Before you do Bong’s P-38 sojourn to his home town of Poplar, Wisconsin for some inspiration, and cheese.

Hey obiwan,
Very nicely done indeed!!! So how was the over all build. From the looks of the pix, the detailing is good.
BTW, is she raised or engraved panel lines and how is the cockpit layed out interms of detailing?
Do you know if there is a reissue of the Arado?
Flaps up, Mike

Hehehe… If your Bismark is 1/72 scale, I’d like to see it too!! [:p]

Great job, obiwan!! It looks more like a 1/48 kit to me! Is that rigging i see down near the support struts of the floats? i usually shy away from anything related to rigging… and you did it in 1/72! Bravo!

How about a shot of the underside! [:D]

Thanks dannyandre , Mike and pareng shrikes.
sorry for the late reply , problems logging on from here.

dannyandre , Poplar is a little far for me but I would love to go there one day.
I can almost here the museum beckoning not to mentoin the cheese.yum !

Mike , overall its a very simple build.Cockpit has minimal details but its not really a major
problem in 1/72.I only added some seat belts and decided to live with the remaining
sparseness. The kit is raised panel lined.
The fitting was good but there were a lot of gaps where the struts and the floats meet ,
also where the struts and fuselage meet.I used a lot of cyano to fill these up as well as
a few sink marks on the kit and then lots of sanding.
The decals were yellowed but I left them in the sun for a few days. They were easy to
apply but just a little thick.
The major headache was the engine cowling which needed to be reshaped and rescribed at he joints.
Overall for the age of the kit I would say the detailing is adequate and good value for money.
As for availability look it up on ebay , there are always a few there.
here is a link , I believe its the same kit.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1189&item=3187892945

pareng shrikes , the rigging was done with invisable thread available at haberdasheries.
I drilled holes where the rigging would be and glued the thread in with cyano.Waited
for it to dry then trimmed and glued the other end. This was quite painstaking , on hindsight if I had some cyano accelerator it would really make things easier
I’ll take a shot of the underside and post it later tonite.

obiwan[:)]
nice looking arado (that thing must be pretty small right in 1/72?), an dgreat looking photos!![;)]
somehow, my shots of my projects on my dining room table look a bit feeble now![V]…thanks for sharing.
regards,
nick

Thanks Nick!
Actually its about 6 inches long and wide ,its bigger than my 1/72 262 ,
so it ain’t that itty bitty. Please post the pictures Nick ,I am still looking foward to see
your work.
