I have worked with a family member for the same company for 21 years, she has been there for 37 years. She got a call today, as we are currently working from home due to COVID, that her job is being eliminated. We work the same position.
I haven’t heard a peep from our supervisor or any coworkersyet today and have been on vacation since Thanksgiving day, makes me wonder if I will even have a job when I sign back in tomorrow…
It’s certainly hard and unstable times for many.
I certainly hope so. Try not to " what if" if you can.

semms it’s always this time of the year when this happens. Been there done that way too many times.
Yeah, we both survived a big staff cut back in March 2018 as entire departments were relocated to other corporate offices both domestic and offshore, and a 10% cut in May across the entire corporation. Our division even started hired a number of new employees in July and August, though all at the management level. Funny that they all survived the cut apparently, I reached out to a coworker for the skinny, but the grunts get another 10% staff cut as of today.
I really need to get out of here ASAP. Six of us will now be doing the work of a department that used to employ sixteen.
I know where you’re coming from. When covid hit, our shop shut down, and we were slow anyway. I’m the only guy left, just getting a couple of hours a week. All the paint shop stuff went to another shop and all the collision work does too. They hired a new lady to run the office, and run it as a satellite office, just taking in jobs.
At least at 68, I have social security to fall back on.
Yup my wife got let go from her job 7 months ago because of the slow down in the industry she worked in due to covid and no job prospects in site.
We were at what I call the tail end of our working careers hoping to retire in the next 5 to 7 years.
She made fairly good money and without that income and living off my modest pay checks this has already set back our retirement plans at least a couple of years or possibly longer as the chance of the wife getting another job making the same money is highly unlikely.

Well, I made it through today. 6 other staff across 3 other departments didn’t, so 7 cuts in total. It just blows my mind every time staffing is cut by 10% those making these decisions seem to believe there will be no affect to operations and our client base won’t notice and ask questions.
Guess that is why they are where they are, and I am where I am.
From the other end of the deal; I’ve run my company for 29 years and I’ve had to lay people off.
Worst thing.
Holiday is hard because if you wait until January, your employee has used up their vacation, spent their expendable cash.
This is a horrible time. I can assure you that at this point laying people off is about like selling the tires from your car.

Yes, that’s a fair point. Though there is more to this story than I am willing to share in a public forum about the daily operations and our capricious corporate culture, but the analogy of having sold the tires off our car is incredibly apt to the situation we are now in.
