A Great Loss

To all and especially J Tilley. I’ve not seen a posting and thought it might be appropriate to inform you that we lost Joe McCleary on December 30. Joe was a Skipper of the Hampton Roads Ship Model Society. Captain McCleary (USN, Ret) had a distinguished career in the US Navy and was an award-winning ship modeller. He also served as director of the Nautical Research Guild. He was a modeller at Mariners’ Museum until his last day. Joe helped me get started and, I’m sure contributed to the careers (if that’s the right word) of many others.

I’m very sorry to hear that. I never had the pleasure of meeting Captain McCleary; he came along after my time. (In my day Marvin Bryant, a remarkable man and a good friend, was the chief denizen of the modeler’s booth. He passed away about fifteen years ago.) I do recall Captain McCleary’s work with the NRG. He will indeed be sorely missed.

Ditto.

god bless his soul.
