Hey folks,
I am looking for good Sherman and Tiger kits to start my forray into Armor building. Don’t care which variant of either, just looking for a decent overall fit to ease things along, but in general if the respective variants could be close in time period to each other I would like that (I am thinking of doing a “Versus” kind of display, if that makes sense.)
Overall looking for good fit and decent detail OOB.

If you’re looking for 1/35 scale, for the Tiger, I’d find the Tamiya Mid- or Early- Production Tiger. They’re reasonably priced and build up rather nicely. I have built the Early Production model. DML’s seem to be the gold standard, but they have a high parts count and are probably not the best kit to start building armor with as they can be overwhelming. (I tried and the kit is still unfinished) The instructions leave much to be desired as well.
I’ve yet to build a Sherman, but I would assume the same holds true. DML may be the better choice there though, since they have several varients on the market, and I’ve never heard anything really bad about them. [2c]
and i 2nd that start off with the tamyias. i have a dragon on the bench now and though i am not a rookie its kicking my butt. also look at the testors both the tamiyas and the testors are not hard on the wallet either. were the dragons and the academy are kinda of in the pricey range.
Look no further then Tamiya Tiger I Late. No rubber tires either! Builds like a dream, I don’t recall using putty, but I’m sure I dabbed some on. Be advised, it does need zimmerit if you care about accuracy.
For the Sherman, again, Tamiya’s Early went together like nothing. Plenty of extras too.
ditto on the early sherman, built two. No problems whatsoever
From one New Hampshire native to another, welcome.
The Tamiya kits really are a great choice especially if you’re new to the dark side.
The old Tamiya Tiger and Tamiya Firefly… Great starter kits and good “Vs” display… A Villers Bocage setting would be accurate for both kits… There were Tiger/Firefly engagements that literally took place at ranges of a few feet in that battle…
Excellent guys, Tamiya all the way it will be!
Thanks again
Brian
The one thing I recommend for the Tiger is some PE grilles. A must for a good looking rear deck.
