Hunnicutt’s ‘Sherman: A History of the American Medium Tank’ is said to be as good as Jentz’ ‘Germany’s Tiger Tanks’ but at $300 it’s not option. Any good books out there still in print that cover the subject well. One that covers the variants, all 20,000 or so that there were?
From what I’ve seen, Shermanfreak is probably better than any $300 book out there. Am I wrong?
Appreciate the vote of confidence Lee, but I’m no where near the league that Mr. Hunnicut is in.
Of course his Sherman book is at the top of the heap. Covers all the technical data as well as many of the variants. But there are some very good smaller publications that a person can use to build up their info on the Sherman. Here’s a list of a few that I have found to be helpful.
- “Sherman In Action” by Bruce Culver - Squadron / Signal Publications
- “M4 Sherman Walk Around” by Jim Mesko - Squadron / Signal Publications
- "Tanks in Detail - Medium Tank M4 (76mm & 105mm) by Terry J. Gander - Ian Allan Publishing
- “M4 Sherman” by George Forty - Blandford Press
- “The Sherman at War Vols 1 & 2” by Steven J. Zaloga - Concord Publications
- “M4 Sherman” by Michael Green - Motorbooks International
- “Modeling the Sherman Tank” - Ampersand Publishing
Many of these are still in print or available at clearing sites like Abebooks. The last one listed is very rare and was going on E-Bay for around $65.
This should get you started anyways.
Between this book and Robert you should be good to go (it’s working for me). The “in action” book wouldn’t hurt either.
I knew I could count on you Robert.
I read the Forty book and ‘Death Traps’ which isn’t about details, just negative info. A few others too but they were all very broad. I’ll take a look at the others, especially ‘Tanks in Detail’, since the 105’s what I’m dealing with at the moment.
If you can find them, Ground Power issues 031 and 032 (Issue 12, 1996 and Issue 1, 1997), they are good references too. They’ve got a few color pictures too!
MMiR’s “Modeling the Sherman Tank” - Ampersand Publishing . I won this book on e-Bay a month ago. Robert is right the book is Excellent. I had to pay $51.00 for it. The most cheapest book and would be good to have is M4 Sherman Walk Around" by Jim Mesko - Squadron / Signal Publications. you could get this book for $10-15 dollars. Good luck in your search.
