A get to know you better thread

I know many of your screen names, but was mildly interested in your lives a bit more than just reading your threads.

I’m 28, live in Las Vegas, Nevada, and have been modeling tanks for about 3 years now. I left the hobby about a year a go, but now i’m back in full swing.

I am a high school English teacher, am an avid comic book collector (save the jokes), and enjoy watching movies. The following are some of my faves:

Rocky
Jaws
Goodfellas
Casino
Bottle Rocket
American Beauty
Midnight Cowboy
Traffic
Fargo
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (well, anything Eastwood really)

I thought I would let y’all know about me. If you want to as well, let’s hear it!

Happy building!

Mike

This is a nice idea. I am 32 and live about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. I am married with 2 kids (trying to type with a 17 month sitting on my lap). I sell insurance (yawn). Hobbies include models (obviously), golf and ice hockey. Started modelling around age 10 or so and did airplanes for years. A combonation of burnout on planes and a knee injury got me into tanks, and i have been hooked since. That’s all I can really think of- man am I boring

I’m 35, live in Elkridge, Maryland and have 2 girls Tori age 2 and Nicole age 6.

I work in Downtown DC as an onsite tech for a magor account.
I like to cartoon and write as well as build models…

I’ve been only building a couple years after dabbling a little in high school with it.

Kelly’s Heroes
Saving PVT Ryan
Van Wilder
Dogma
Any Star Wars Movie

Well, that’s about it except the fact that if it wasn’t for this forum, I think I’d be really really lost in this hobby… thanks everyone for all the help given to me.

32, about to graduate from college (finally) in computer science. I do web programming when I have the time, I have 2 kids ages 4 (girl) and 2 (boy), and I enjoy playing guitar, snowboarding, mountain biking and (ofcourse) modelling. I usually model WWII german armor, but I’ve recently found a particular interest in WWI era planes.

Okay, you asked for it!!! Just kidding, will give you the abreviated life story.

Married with children, Boy (11), Girl (9 with attitude) and another Boy (4 almost 5 and not feeling too good at the moment). I’m a Landscape Architect, been working for the local Civic Gov’t on contract but am currently between contracts at the moment (polite way of saying unemployed). Other interests besides models include gardening (Duh! see occupation), golf, mountain biking and hockey. Been doing a lot less of the last two as my 41 year old body no longer keeps up to my 18 year old mind. Movies? After Lord of the Rings there just isn’t anything else that compares.

Got back into modeling last summer after a move to a larger home allowed me the space to set up shop. I built models from my earliest chilhood memories up until I was about 25-26 when I went back to school, got married, kids etc. I build mostly 1/72 WWII anything as well as 1/700 WWII ships

This forum has been great as my busy life with the family and a wife that works evenings and weekends doesn’t allow me to hang out at the LHS very much.

I’m 42, married and have 4 kids between my wife and I (24, 21, 14, 13). I’ve lived in Reno NV for the past 20 years and was in Germany before that for about 7+. Went to High School in Zweibrucken Germany, College in Munich and then worked for the Department of Defense for a couple years. I went off to be the Inventory Controller for Beer Dist. in Reno for 10 years, got tired of keeping track of beer (wait… hmmm… don’t think that’s possible… lol) and switched to the IT industry since I developed a passion for computers and technology.

I’ve been a Systems Trainer for about 10 years and love it! I’m thinking it’s time for a change though… I’m ready to retire and spend all my time playing computer games (Everquest, Everquest II) and building my models. Too bad retirement is still about 20 years away… tee hee

I’ve just gotten back into models the past year or so and am really loving 1/35 scale armor! I’ve always been a WWII nut and have been an avid ready and student of military history. Fav movies include Saving Pvt. Ryan, Lord of the Rings, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Tommy Boy and Kelly’s Hero’s.

It’s nice to be back in the hobby and have an online forum like this to share ideas, tips and tricks and clown around a bit… it’s also nice that I have an understanding wife that puts up with all my free time activities!

We have a small web site that I try to keep updated and will be page with pics of my finished models soon.

Reno, huh? I’m thinking of moving up there. Did you know that 7,000 people are moving to Vegas every month? I’m sick of it. 7,000 a month. Do the math.

Cheers!

Mike

Ok, the unique not ‘old’ person here to post first
i am 16 and am gainfully employed at burger king(ugh)
I have been building for 3 years mostly in the winter and fall, some summer-but spring is a nono, since my 100 year old basement leaks
I live in the middle of no-where
But, i build models, and play paintball.

Reno has had phenominal growth as well, which has been awesome for our home values. I moved here in the mid 80s to finish up my B.S. Degree in Management at UNR and fully intended to settle in Virginia or Maryland but Reno really grew on me. I can’t imagine living anywhere else, at least not for another 10 years or so. I’ve been to Vegas a lot on business. I used to be a Systems Trainer for Bally Systems and now with IGT.

Where the heck is Vegas going to get all the water to support that growth?[:0]

They are talking of pipelines form the Pacific Ocean. I’m not kidding. Also, the Nevada legislature has been wooing the surrounding states for exclusive use of the Colorado River, specifically for drinkable water.

I’m ready to jet.

Cheers!

Mike

like beav, im not as ‘ancient’ as the rest of you modellers. jk. anyway, im 17, born and raised in brooklyn NY. i cant even remember how long ive been modelling. i must have been 9 when i got my first model, i remember it was a ferrari f40 (to date my favorite car) and i moved into afvs and been there ever since. i also like to play paintball, and lacrosse. im afraid my modelling will be put on sabbatical for a while b/c im going away to college next year, carnegie mellon in pittsburgh, not far from JWest21. i hope to continue on my free time (like i have much of that now anyway). well thats me.

I’m 14, live in Mississauga, Ontario, been here forever. I have been doing models since about 8-9 years old. My hobbies include models, mostly 1/35 WWII, hockey (TML), football, bike riding, skiing and woodworking. I don’t have a job but plane to become either or both an aerospace engineer, plane mechanic. My most liked movies include…

Wind talkers
Once upon a time in Mexico
U-571
Saving private Ryan
We were soldiers
Black Hawk Down
Behind Enemy Lines
Tears of the sun
National security
White chicks
Aliens 1,2,3
Predator 1,2
AVP
Bourne Identity, 1,2

Those all all I can think of right now [:)]

Good to know that if we all got together and watched movies, we would all like the same things, isn’t it?

Don’t set aside your modeling habits for study habits. College is easy, a breeze, and you will have plenty of time to build. In fact, I’m willing to bet you will set aside your PARTYING with BEAUTIFUL GIRLS for a neon lamp, a fuzzy T.V., and directions on how to build a foreign model, albeit written by a foreigner! Prioritize, man!

Happy building!

Mike

Isn’t that the truth!

Come on, knowing what movies you like is a way to see into one’s character. Really.

For the record, I hated Natural Born Killers.

Mike

Okay I guess its my turn.

My name is Jeff and I am 30 years old and live in Barrie Ontario.(about 45 minutes north of Toronto) My hometown is famous for a tornado and having Canada’s biggest indoor pot growing operation in the old Molsons brewery.

I am an electrician and in my final year of my electrical apprenticeship. I should be wrapping that up next year hopefully. Only 2000 more hours to go!! I am currently in trade school for 10 weeks which has resulted in me having to shelve the hobby for a bit as my time is very limited with school etc. Thank god its only 4 more weeks.

I am engaged to be married in June to a wonderful woman named Sara who thinks my model addiction is “cute” Bah!
She is a RN. She can come home from work telling me detailed stories of seeing someone who died having their eyes donated but gets grossed out when it comes to getting HER hair out of the shower drain. Gotta love her!!

I just got back into the hobby last year after about 10 years or so. I had forgoten how much I had missed it and its been great rediscovering old skills and learning new ones. I don’t have a preference as to what i build but I have become quite interested in German half tracks lately.

My other interests include mountian biking, hiking and playing some hockey.

As for movies I like most of the ones listed already. I just saw Napolean Dynamite last week and still laughing over it. I also saw Hotel Rwanda 2 weeks ago and it was excellent. Very sad and tragic. Everyone should see it.

Favorite TV show is without a doubt Trailer Park Boys. Best show ever!

Alright I have written a book here but thats mainly cause I am procrastinating studying for my electronics test tomorrow.

Jeff

I’m 43 (44 on March 20), married with 2 kids (girl 11 - going on 21, boy 8). We live in Hicksville, in central Long Island, N.Y. I’m a lieutenant on the NYPD with 23+ years on the job. I’m also been a volunteer fire fighter for 26 years.
I built models through my teens, until college and then gave it up. I got back into the hobby last year when I thought I’d try my hand at painting Civil War figures (I’ve been getting Military History magazine, and later a Civil War mag forever, and thought I could recreate the ones I saw in those magazines). While at a LHS getting some start up supplies, I grabbed a copy of Fine Scale. After reading it and then signing up on the web site and perusing the forums, I began to get the plastic bug again and before I knew it, I had a stack of armor kits and was up to my neck in my new/old hobby. BTW, the civil war figures sit, unfinished, on my work bench if anyone wants them! I hope, eventually, to get my son interested.

I also love to read, with Tom Clancy, Harold Coyle, W.E.B. Griffin, Clive Cussler and Nelson DeMille as my favorite authors. I’ll watch any war movie and I could watch Monty Python and The Holy Grail 24/7.

Just want to say I’ve really enjoyed being a part of this forum and thank everyone for their help and support. I’d like to think I’ve made a few new friends here. Sorry for the sap.
