"A Galaxy Far Away" Reprint: Possible?

“A Galaxy Far Away, Building Star Wars Models” by Matthew Usher: I have searched for an affordable copy of this book for two years now. I am still amazed that I cannot find a copy anywhere for less than $150.00. At this moment, there is not a copy available for less than $189.00. Considering the publication date of this book (2002) and the price it is now demanding, it would seem that a reprint would be a profitable move for Kalmbach Publishing Co… I am wondering if it is possible to encourage such.

It is my understanding that Mr. Usher was or is on the FineScale Modeler staff. I was hoping maybe his input could be given on this topic. At least, I would hope that fellow Star Wars modeling fans who were unable to get a copy of this book while it was available would be interested in helping. But I am not sure where to start…

Should I recruit the help of the community to bombard Kalmbach with letters, phone calls and e-mails? That could be a tad bothersome for them. Perhaps starting an online petition would be a better idea with a few making hints to Kalmbach that such a petition exists.

Any input on this matter from the FineScale community would be appreciated. I am not much of an activist. But I really want a copy of this book.

Ideas?

wow.

Hey there! I wonder why i had missed this post here…[%-)]

I hope this helps. I ran a search through Amazon.com and here’s what i got:

Looks like what you are looking for. I know it’s not the price you had been hoping for, but it seems to be the only available way. Other than that, sorry i’m not much help here. Usually don’t delve into too much scifi, but good luck to you in finding a copy, bro![tup]

I am as surprised as anyone that my book now commands this kind of money!

The book dropped out of the Kalmbach catalog a couple of years ago, and I don’t think there’s any chance it’ll be reissued.

To borrow a phrase from another series, “It’s dead, Jim.”

Thanks for your interest, though.

That’s a good story! I think someone is just trying to plus up his retirement fund![swg]

Just kidding…

Ha!

Trust me, if I had any idea copies would be commanding that much $$, I would have banked in a garage full of them!

I should check with my friends in the books department to see whether or not I could at least distribute good color copies or maybe a .pdf version. I’m not sure who owns/controls the rights at this point.

And if anyone has questions about any of the models/projects in the book, you can always e-mail me. Answers are free!

I suppose one would have to see the book in order to have questions. It’s been along time since i did anything scifi (and never done anything star wars) but i would love to see this book you had written on the subject. Not only am i planning a few Star Wars builds at some point, but i’d also like to know why it is so rare and expensive! I’m thinking it has to be good…

Wow, that much for a $22 book that’s 5 years old (mine is dated 1st ed., 2002). While it is a great sci-fi modeling volume, most of the kits featured are long OOP. It figures that it is worth that much money and my “near mint” volume has a printing flaw on page 93/94 (the lower corner of the page was folded in during printing an is mangled).

Thanks for everyone’s replies and thanks to Mr. Usher.

There certainly seems to be a demand for the book. And I would have been quite happy with pdf.

I picked up a copy of this book about a year ago in a hobby shop for the cover price. Check around and see what is available, you may find it.
