Here is my Tamiya 1/32 F-4C. I used Fox One decals. It portrays Col Olds’ aircraft for his last mission 9/23/67. According to the information I have the plane was freshly painted for this mission. I kept the weathering to a minimum based on this information. I used Eduard photoetch for details in the cockpit. The ECM pod may not be exactly right for 1967 but, I am happy with the look. I hope that I have not lowered the high standards that normally is shown on the forum. Comments welcome.
Bablenw, here is the Mig you asked about for comparison.
I added some photos of a Hobbycraft Mig-17. It was going to be Col. Toom’s (?) North Vietnamese Mig-17 but, I could not get the camo to look right to me. I ended up making my own version of camo and put Syrian markings on it. The Mig is straight out the box.
Gigatron I tried to get some better photos of the cockpit, no luck though maybe a better camera would do the trick.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. Day walker for the camo, I took the instruction sheet enlarged it to the proper size on my scanner/copier. Printed the sheets. Cut out the patterns as I needed them. Then placed them on the model. I used low tack masking tape for the edges of the pattern, following the outline on the pattern on paper. After getting the masks in place, I went and lifted the edges just a little to get somewhat of a feathered edge. It sounds complicated but, it is not. The hardest part was getting the math figured out to get the masks to the right size. I am not a wiz when it comes to free hand camo with the air brush. I have tried several times and I just don’t like the way they turn out. I have to Thank my 17 year old son as well. if it wasn’t for him I may still be sitting at the computer trying to figure out how photo bucket works! Took him about 30 seconds to show me what to do. Thanks again RJK, MikeV, Butz and Artbr.
Very nice build! I like the “non” weathering, thats my favorite phantom camo pattern, done very well, I will try a phantom in a few years once I get better Thanks for sharing!
I like it. Very well done. Good to see an aircraft with out over emphasized panel lines. The AN/ALQ-87 ECM pod is the correct type for that time period.
Beautiful job!! Looks like it just rolled off the assembly line (I guess it did, huh?) Looks great w/o overdone weathering. Fear not, there is no lowering of standards on this one! [8D]
Dupes, the panel lines have a very very light wash in them. I kept it as light as I could.
MikeV, I have never sat in an actual Phantom but, I have been in the seat of the “City of Dayton” That is the nose section that was used in the TV series A Call to Glory (if I remember right) That is at tthe USAF museum in Dayton. That was a blast.
Feld Marshall Model, This is not my first by a long shot. I been building models since the mid sixties (42 years) I have never had nerve enough to post one until this. I have 85 completed on the shelf and over 120 waiting to build.
You did the old F-4 proud, MKelley! Your paint job is excellent, and the “office” details are superb as well! The panel lines are just right in my eye as well, not overdone. Overall, an excellent build, you should submit it to FSM for possible publication!
